A method for measuring an adhesive strength of a multi-layer material having at least two layers, such as a plain bearing, which method includes the steps of placing a mold on one surface of the multi-layer material, casting a brazing metal into the mold to form and secure a resulting cast structure to the one surface of the multi-layer material such that the cast structure includes a first column portion connected to and extending substantially upright from the one surface of the multi-layer, an intermediate portion extending and diverging in diameter from the upper end of the first column portion and a second column portion extending from the upper end of the intermediate portion, causing the opposite chucks of a tension tester to grasp the second column portion and the multi-layer material or a holder connected to the multi-layer material, respectively, and applying a tensile force to the respective layers of the multi-layer material in a direction transverse to the one surface of said multi-layer material.

A steel strip having distributed thereon powder containing aluminum as its main ingredient is cooled to a temperature range of less than 15.degree. C. below room temperature. The cooled material is immediately subjected to cold rolling and then to sintering, to produce multilayer sliding material. By cooling the steel strip and the powder distributed thereon together to a temperature range of less than 15.degree. C. below room temperature, occurrence of seizure between the powder and rolls of a rolling mill can be avoided.

Bearing alloys are made by adding chromium, one or more rare earth elements and/or magnesium to the conventional Sn-base white metal bearing alloys. The addition of such additives, even only with slow cooling after casting, enables the refining of cubic crystal grains and acicular crystal grains in the alloy structure, improving the bearing characteristics. The amounts to be added are specified to be within the ranges between 0.005% and 0.5% by weight for Cr, 0.001% and 1% by weight for rare earth element or elements and 0.001% and 1% by weight for Mg.

An Al alloy suitable for use as the material of a sliding part such as those in automotive internal combustion engine. The alloy consists essentially of: more than 11 weight % but up to 18 weight % of Si, more than 3 weight % but up to 10 weight % of Sn, not smaller than 0.2 weight % but less than 2 weight % of Cu, and the balance substantially Al. Pb may be added to improve the anti-seizure property and the compatibility. One, two or more elements selected from a group consisting of Na, Sr and P may be added to make fine the Si grains. The alloy can further contain also at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mn, V, Cr, Ti, Mg and Fe in order to further improve the mechanical properties, particularly the strength. This alloy exhibits superior anti-seizure property and high wear resistance and, hence, can be used suitably as the material of various sliding parts.

A device for measuring interference and wall thickness of a half cylindrical plain bearing includes a bearing support block provided with a substantially semi-cylindrical shaped recess for receiving the plain bearing, a pressing mechanism for closely pressing the plain bearing against the recess, a substantially semi-columnar shaped wall thickness measuring head having a smaller outer diameter than the inner diameter of the plain bearing when it closely contacts with the recess, and a positioning mechanism for establishing a predetermined positional relationship between the recess and the wall thickness measuring head upon measurement. The bearing support block carries a detector or detectors for measuring interference of the half cylindrical plain bearing, and the wall thickness measuring head incorporates measuring instruments such as air micrometers.
