Abstract: In a wireless communication system including a group of base stations, the base stations are all configured to operate on a common wideband carrier, and each base station is further configured to operate on a narrowband carrier defined as a guest carrier within the frequency range of the wideband carrier, with each base station's narrowband carrier being non-overlapping in frequency with each other base station's narrowband carrier. Further, each base station could be configured to avoid allocation of air-interface resources on the common wideband carrier that would overlap in frequency with the narrowband carrier on which any other base station of the group is configured to operate within the wideband carrier.

Abstract: A method for controlling handover of a user equipment device (UE) between (i) a first cell site that provides dual-connectivity service on a first radio access technology (RAT) and a second RAT and (ii) a second cell site that provides standalone first-RAT service, wherein the handover includes transitioning the UE from source first-RAT service to target first-RAT service. The method includes setting a handover threshold to use as a basis to evaluate whether target first-RAT coverage detected by the UE is sufficiently stronger than source first-RAT coverage detected by the UE, where setting the handover threshold includes setting the handover threshold to a value selected based on whether the UE has detected that second-RAT coverage of the first cell site meets a defined threshold measurement threshold. Further, the method includes applying the set handover threshold as a basis to control whether to invoke the handover of the UE.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling application of MU-MIMO. The disclosure provides for considering a device's block error rate (BLER) as a basis to decide whether to provide the device with MU-MIMO service. For instance, a base station could determine which of the base station's served devices each have threshold low BLER. And on at least that basis, the base station could select each such device to receive MU-MIMO service. Or faced with a choice between devices to receive MU-MIMO service, the base station could compare the devices' levels of BLER and could select the devices that have lower BLER to receive MU-MIMO service.

Abstract: A base station dynamically controls whether or not to serve a WCD on an in-band carrier defined within occupied bandwidth of a host carrier, with the dynamic controlling being based on whether the base station is operating in a capacity-mode on the host carrier, such as whether the base station has beamforming enabled on the host carrier and/or the base station is serving one or more relay nodes on the host carrier. If the base station is operating in a capacity-mode on the host carrier, then the base station could responsively transition a WCD from being served on the in-band carrier to instead being served on a guard-band carrier defined within a guard-band of the host carrier, or to being served on another carrier that is not an in-band carrier defined in the occupied bandwidth of the host carrier.

Abstract: When a serving base station encounters a trigger for handover of a UE to a target base station, the serving base station will responsively predict whether, before the serving base station would direct the UE to handover to the target base station, an inactivity timer for the UE will expire, and the serving base station will then control the handover based on that prediction. For instance, responsive to the predicting being that the inactivity timer will expire before the serving base station would send a handover command message to the UE, the serving base station could forgo engaging in handover-preparation signaling with the target base station for the handover, instead allowing the UE to transition to idle mode upon expiration of the timer, at which point the UE could then engage in idle-mode handover to the target base station.

Abstract: A method and system for controlling wireless communication over an air interface between a base station and a user equipment device (UE) served by the base station. In examples, the base station is configured to use a particular modulation and coding scheme (MCS) to transmit downlink control signals over the air interface to the UE without the base station beamforming the downlink control signals to the UE. Responsive to the base station determining that the UE is experiencing threshold poor RF conditions on the air interface, the base station reconfigures itself to beamform downlink control signals to the UE. And, given that the base station is reconfigured to beamform downlink control signals to the UE, the base station further reconfigures itself to use a higher-order MCS to transmit downlink control signals to the UE.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system that may help control when a network will request (and receive) a remaining battery energy level report from a UE. Per the disclosure, a network that has an established radio-link-layer connection with the UE could track an amount of time in which the UE operates in a radio-link-layer connected mode. The network could then determine whether the amount of time in which the UE has operated in the radio-link-layer connected mode has exceeded a predetermined threshold amount of time. And responsive to determining that the amount of time in which the UE has operated in the radio-link-layer connected mode has exceeded the threshold amount of time, the network could cause the UE to report to the network the remaining battery energy level of the UE.

Accordingly, example methods and systems are provided that may help to balance the application of TTI bundling and CoMP.

Abstract: Disclosed are structures and processes to help enable a wireless communication device (WCD) to support operation in a dual-connectivity scenario, such as where the WCD operates concurrently with 4G and 5G wireless connections over frequency channels in a common frequency band. Downlink low-noise-amplification could be controlled with a split dual-stage arrangement and control communication between modems in the WCD. And uplink maximum-power reduction could be controlled based on an evaluation of the frequency channels used by the respective connections, given knowledge of frequency resources allocated for one of those connections, and with a presumed worst-case-scenario frequency-resource allocation on the other connection.
