A movable carriage for the main contacts spans one end of the solenoid and has a latching portion in the solenoid that engages the inner end of a reset plunger in two sequential states (i.e., unlatched and latched). An electrical miswire feature is included to prevent the device from being reset until the AC power is properly connected to the device and inadvertent failure of the miswire feature due, for example, to dropping the device prior to installation is avoided. Also, an enhanced self-test, or auto-monitoring, feature is provided that is more robust than that which has been previously disclosed.

An over voltage protection device for a GFCI having a voltage divider network connected across the line terminals of the GFCI, and an over voltage detecting diode connected between the voltage divider network and a gate terminal of an SCR. The voltage divider and diode cause a signal to be fed to the gate terminal of the SCR to trip the GFCI when an over voltage condition exists at the line terminals. The voltage divider is adjustable, with the sensitivity of the over voltage protection varying in accordance with adjustment of the potential from the voltage divider. In an embodiment of the invention, the circuit includes an indicator, such as a photodiode, which indicates the occurrence of an over voltage condition. In addition, a blocking diode is connected between the gate terminal of the SCR and a triggering terminal of an integrated circuit of the GFCI where the over voltage detecting diode conducts current to the gate terminal when an over voltage condition occurs, and the blocking diode conducts current to the gate terminal of the SCR when a ground-fault condition occurs.

The auto-monitoring circuit initiates an auto-monitoring routine which, among other things, establishes a test fault situation on either the positive or negative half-wave of the power cycle and determines whether the detection mechanisms within the device appropriately detect the test fault and whether the device would trip in the event of an actual fault. Additional functionality of the auto-monitoring circuit permits automatic verification that the device is properly wired, that is, not miswired, and determines whether the device has reached the end of its useful life.

A circuit interrupting device, such as a GFCI receptacle device, is provided that automatically resets itself when power is initially applied to the device, for example, when the device is first installed or when power is reapplied after a power outage occurs. When power is applied correctly to the line side of the device, as opposed to the load side, a voltage is generated that turns on a switching device. Turning on the switching device allows a low level of electric current to flow which, in turn, allows a higher level electric current to flow which closes the latching mechanism of the device and places the device in the reset condition.
