Abstract: An occupant classification system comprises a capacitive sensor configured to measure capacitance. The capacitive sensor is at least partially arranged between a seat frame and at least one of a seat cover and a seat cushion of a seat. A sensor is configured to measure at least one of weight and pressure on the seat. The sensor is at least partially arranged between a vehicle structure and a component of the seat. A controller is configured to generate an occupant classification based on the measured capacitance and the at least one of the measured weight and the measured pressure on the seat.

Abstract: An airbag assembly of the present disclosure includes a forward cushion portion, a left side cushion portion, and a right side cushion portion. The forward cushion portion is configured to be disposed in front of an occupant of a vehicle. The left and right side cushion portions are connected to and in fluid communication with the forward cushion portion, are configured to be disposed on left and right sides of the occupant, respectively, and are configured to be mounted to a roof of the vehicle. The left side cushion portion, the right side cushion portion, and the forward cushion portion define at least one opening disposed above a lower region of the forward cushion portion and between the left and right side cushion portions. The at least one opening allows at least a portion of the lower region to move forward relative to the left and right side cushion portions.

Abstract: An airbag assembly for mounting above an occupant in a vehicle includes an airbag housing and an airbag cushion. The airbag cushion is connected to the housing and is deployable from an uninflated state to an inflated state. The airbag cushion includes a forward portion and a rearward portion. The forward portion is positioned closer to the occupant than the rearward portion when the airbag cushion is in the inflated state. The forward portion is also separated from the rearward portion by a void. The void configured to cause a head of the occupant to rotate forward relative to a torso of the occupant when the occupant contacts the airbag cushion.

Abstract: A seat assembly includes a seatback having a seatback body and a door pivotally coupled to the seatback body. The door can rotate relative to the seatback body about an axis, which extends from the first seatback edge to the second seatback edge. The door can move relative to the seatback between an open position and a closed position, and covers the opening leading to the internal compartment when disposed in the closed position. The internal compartment is accessible through the opening when the door is in the open position. The seat assembly further includes a seat base below the seatback. The first seatback edge is closer to the seat base than the second seatback edge.

Abstract: A method for controlling an inflatable airbag system in a motor vehicle having a seatbelt includes detecting a position of a vehicle occupant relative to an airbag suppression zone (ASZ). Electronic input signals are received from a sensor suite, including an occupant position signal and a seatbelt usage status signal. A restraint capacity setting of the airbag is adjusted in response to the electronic input signals such that corresponding restraint activation logic is executed by the controller based on whether the occupant is belted or unbelted. Different ASZs may be used for belted and unbelted occupants. A motor vehicle includes a vehicle body defining a vehicle interior, an airbag, a seatbelt, a sensor suite for detecting a position of an occupant relative to the ASZ, and a controller operable for controlling a restraint capacity setting and location of the ASZ in accordance with the method.
