    摘要: An optical amplifier, particularly useful for optical fiber telecommunication lines, which includes an active fiber doped with a fluorescent dopant which provides light energy emission at the wavelength of the transmission signals when the latter signals are applied thereto. One section of telecommunication line is connected to one input of a dichroic coupler, the output of which is connected to one end of the active fiber and the other input of which is connected to a source of pumping energy at a wavelength lower than that of the transmission signals. The other end of the active fiber is connected to another section of the telecommunication line. In rectilinear form, the active fiber provides single-mode propagation of the energy at the signal wavelength and multi-mode propagation of energy at the pumping energy wavelength. However, the active fiber is bent to a radius of curvature for at least 70% of its length which will provide only fundamental mode propagation at the pumping energy wavelength which also reduces the mode diameter for the transmission signals.

    摘要: An amplification architecture for WDM receiver systems. The WDM channel grid is divided into groups of adjacent channels. A separate optical amplifier is provided for each channel with a single pump being shared among the channels of each group. The gain experienced by channels of a given group may be adjusted by varying the power of the group's pump. This approach allows equalization of received channel power such that all channels fall within the desired dynamic range. The amplification architecture may be implemented in a space-efficient manner at low cost.

    摘要: An approach for automatic Raman gain and tilt control for a WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical communication systems is disclosed. An optical fiber carries a plurality of optical signals, in which at least one of the optical signals are reference signals. An optical gain unit (e.g., Raman pump unit) couples to the optical fiber and adjusts the reference signals to compensate, in part, for losses associated with the optical fiber and gain tilt accumulation. Upon detecting and analyzing the reference signals, a controller controls the optical gain unit and outputs a control signal to the optical gain unit based upon the analyzed reference signals. An optical amplifier is connected to the optical fiber and amplifies the optical signals. The optical gain unit provides a nearly constant power per channel at an input of the optical amplifier. Under this approach, a Raman gain control mechanism, combined with the use of gain controlled EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier), allows high transmission capacity over ultra-long distances without optical regeneration and with high flexibility.

    摘要: An optical telecommunication system has at least two sources of optical modulated signals at different wavelengths in a predetermined transmission wavelength band, together with a multiplexer for the signals, an optical fiber line connected at one end to the multiplexer, and a demultiplexer/receiver for the signals. The line comprises an optical fiber having a chromatic dispersion value lower than a predetermined value in the transmission wavelength band and increasing as wavelength increases. The fiber also has a zero value of chromatic dispersion at a wavelength lower than the minimum wavelength of the transmission wavelength band by such an amount that no local wavelength zero value of the chromatic dispersion present in the fiber and capable of generating a four-wave-mixing phenomenon is included in the band.
