A dual seal packer is shown having a central mandrel which carries upper and lower seal assemblies which straddle an outer cage assembly. Rocker type slips are carried in the cage assembly and are set by a single expander ring. Special support surfaces on the slips cooperate with mating support surfaces on the cage assembly to provide support for the slips under tensive and compressive loading. The slips and upper and lower seal assemblies are set in a single step operation by rotating the mandrel to the right while holding tension on the well string from the surface.

A locking production seal assembly is shown for sealing a well tubing string within the bore of a surrounding well conduit which has been provided with an internal recess. The seal assembly includes a sliding mandrel which is made up in the well tubing string and an outer sleeve which is carried about the mandrel. The outer sleeve has an external seal for sealing with the interior of the surrounding conduit and an internal seal for sealing with the sliding mandrel. A setting sleeve carried between the mandrel and outer sleeve carries a set of setting dogs for engaging the surrounding conduit and a set of locking dogs for locking the setting sleeve to the surrounding sleeve once the assembly is set. The load carrying setting dogs are separated from the mandrel exterior by the setting sleeve to prevent damage to the mandrel exterior.

A well cementing valve is shown which includes a tubular mandrel having at least one lateral port and which is adapted to be made in a well tubing string. An external seal ring having a seal region circumscribes the mandrel on one side of the lateral port. An axially movable sleeve valve initially covers the mandrel ports on the mandrel exterior. The sleeve valve has a pressure responsive seal area subject to fluid pressure in the mandrel for moving the sleeve valve. An axially slidable protective sleeve initially surrounds the mandrel and the sleeve valve. A plurality of shear pins connect the protective sleeve to the sleeve valve to restrain the sleeve valve against axial displacement. The pressure responsive seal area on the sleeve valve is operable to apply a shearing load on the pins to permit an axial displacement of the protective sleeve and an opposite axial displacement of the sleeve valve to open the ports.

A setting tool is shown of the type adapted to be made up in a pipe string for releasably engaging a setting sleeve in a well bore. The setting tool has a mandrel having an upper end adapted to be connected in the pipe string and having a lower end. A setting nut is carried on the mandrel having external connecting threads for engaging mating connecting threads located on the interior of a setting sleeve disposed about the lower end of the mandrel. The mandrel is slidably disposed within the setting nut when the setting nut is engaging the setting sleeve and the mandrel is slidable between an extended running-in position and a weight set-down position.A latch collar having at least one latch ear is carried on the mandrel exterior. The setting sleeve has at least one end notch adapted to receive the latch ear for preventing relative rotational movement between the connecting threads of the setting nut and the setting sleeve when the mandrel is in the extended running-in position and allowing relative movement between the connecting threads when the mandrel is in the weigh-down position to release the connecting threads. Torque override is provided for releasing the latch mechanism upon the application of a predetermined rotational torque to the mandrel to thereby allow relative rotational movement between the connecting threads without the application of downward force to the mandrel. The mandrel is spring biased in the extended running-in position and connected by a shear mechanism to the setting sleeve to prevent inadvertent release of the tool during the running in operations.

Casing is scored but not penetrated in one embodiment of a method that allows access to the formation without perforating or section milling the casing. In the run in condition the casing is impervious, to allow cement to be pumped through it to seal the annular space between the casing and the wellbore. After the cement is delivered and displaced through a shoe, the casing is expanded in the regions where it was scored to create openings that go against the wellbore wall. In between the expanded sections the cemented casing offers isolation between adjacent formations.

A device and system for improving efficiency of subterranean cutting elements uses a controlled oscillation super imposed on steady drill bit rotation to maintain a selected rock fracture level. In one aspect, a selected oscillation is applied to the cutting element so that at least some of the stress energy stored in an earthen formation is maintained after fracture of the rock is initiated. Thus, this maintained stress energy can thereafter be used for further crack propagation. In one embodiment, an oscillation device positioned adjacent to the drill bit provides the oscillation. A control unit can be used to operate the oscillation device at a selected oscillation. In one arrangement, the control unit performs a frequency sweep to determine an oscillation that optimizes the cutting action of the drill bit and configures the oscillation device accordingly. One or more sensors connected to the control unit measure parameters used in this determination.

An expandable slip ring is used to secure attachment of an expanded tubular to a surrounding tubular. It features elongated generally axially oriented openings separated by narrow segments. As a swage is advanced within a tubular that has the slip ring outside it the narrow segments or tabs expand and can break but the ring is still held to its shape as the expansion progresses due to the integrity of other tabs that can subsequently break as the swage advances within the tubular that is surrounded by the slip ring. The integrity of the slip ring is enhanced for storage and run in while the expansion characteristics are more uniform as the ring retains some structural integrity during much of the expansion process.

A swedge assembly is disclosed which has the capability of allowing for a sealing connection between an inner tubular and an outer tubular where the outer tubular has significant out of roundness. A resilient segment or segments is disposed on the swedge in contact with the inner tubular to be expanded so as to fill any voids created by out of roundness of the outer tubular. The resilient material may be an elastomer or any pliable metallic or any other material compatible with the applicable well bore conditions.

A check valve assembly for the bottom of a casing string with increased open area is provided. Multiple check valves are provided for assurance of ultimate closure. Bypass flow paths are available during run in that increase the normal available open area from about 3 square inches to a range of about 10 square inches and even higher. Components freely float during run in to provide the greater open area and are subsequently repositioned with known techniques of dropping a ball and pressurization when the casing has reached the desired depth.
