A well cementing valve is shown which includes a tubular mandrel having at least one lateral port and which is adapted to be made in a well tubing string. An external seal ring having a seal region circumscribes the mandrel on one side of the lateral port. An axially movable sleeve valve initially covers the mandrel ports on the mandrel exterior. The sleeve valve has a pressure responsive seal area subject to fluid pressure in the mandrel for moving the sleeve valve. An axially slidable protective sleeve initially surrounds the mandrel and the sleeve valve. A plurality of shear pins connect the protective sleeve to the sleeve valve to restrain the sleeve valve against axial displacement. The pressure responsive seal area on the sleeve valve is operable to apply a shearing load on the pins to permit an axial displacement of the protective sleeve and an opposite axial displacement of the sleeve valve to open the ports.

An equipment insert is shown for use within a section of well pipe. The equipment insert is installed within the pipe bore at the well surface. The equipment insert is run into the bore of the well pipe and manipulated with a hand tool to actuate gripping slips and a seal ring to grip the pipe interior bore and to form a seal with the interior bore of the section of well pipe. The section of well pipe containing the equipment insert can then be made up in the well pipe string, and the well pipe string can be run into the well bore for conducting well bore operations.

An expandable slip ring is used to secure attachment of an expanded tubular to a surrounding tubular. It features elongated generally axially oriented openings separated by narrow segments. As a swage is advanced within a tubular that has the slip ring outside it the narrow segments or tabs expand and can break but the ring is still held to its shape as the expansion progresses due to the integrity of other tabs that can subsequently break as the swage advances within the tubular that is surrounded by the slip ring. The integrity of the slip ring is enhanced for storage and run in while the expansion characteristics are more uniform as the ring retains some structural integrity during much of the expansion process.

An expandable tubular pin and box connection is described having a feature of trapping the pin nose after preferably deforming the pin nose plastically in an outward direction away from the longitudinal axis of the connection. The box end is held away from the pin wall before expansion so that its tendency to curl inwardly upon expansion causes it to bend against the pin wall for sealing with it. The thread profile is also optimized to reduce flank separation as a result of expansion.

Three embodiments of an expandable screen are described. In the preferred embodiment, the base layer, filtering layer, and outer layer are joined together in a sintering furnace in the form of a flat sheet which is in turn rolled up. The layered sheet is then formed into a tube by rolling it to make a longitudinal or spiral joint which is welded with connections placed on ends. In an alternative embodiment, the base layer and filtering layer are sintered together and formed into a tube which is in turn inserted into an outer protective tube. In a third embodiment, a base pipe is perforated and its exterior surface threaded. A wire runs through the threads with a protective jacket over the underlying assembly. Upon expansion, the opening sizes remain relatively constant.

The present invention relates to an improved method for multilateral completion and cementing (i.e., sealing) the juncture between primary and lateral wellbores. The completion method of the present invention addresses the issue of cementation and sealing of junctures between vertical and lateral wellbores. It is desirable to have the ability to re-enter each lateral wellbore as well as maintain the option to perform any function that could be done in a single wellbore. For this reason, cemented and sealed lateral wellbores are desirable so that normal isolation, stimulation or any other operation can be achieved. The method allows sealing and reworking of either wellbores with single laterals or multiple laterals and provides safe durable junctions therebetween. The method of this invention utilizes a "hook" liner hanger system. The Hook liner hanger system includes a novel camming surface and guide slot which cooperates with a complimentary control lug to selectively direct a tool in a primary or lateral wellbore.

A ball dropping assembly is shown of the type which is connected in a string of pipe for dropping a ball in the pipe string. A main body is mounted on the pipe. The main body has an interior bore which communicates with the interior of the pipe. A cam housing is received within the main body bore and has a ball receiving recess formed in the interior thereof. A ball dropping can is rotatably received within the cam housing. The can has partially cut-away sidewalls which form a camming surface for the ball. A retaining nut engages and seals the cam housing and can within the body whereby rotation of the can with respect to the cam housing houses the camming surface to contact the ball to thereby eject the ball from the ball receiving recess into the interior of the pipe without opening the assembly to the atmosphere.
