Disclosed is a method and apparatus for guidance of a magnetic head to a predetermined reference position generally used to recalibrate head to media orientation. An electro-magnetic or photosensitive device is provided to accurately and repeatably position a magnetic head carriage to a reference point in order to calibrate the head gap location with respect to parallel tracks across the width of the media. A coarse and fine adjustment method is used to improve the accuracy of establishing the head at the reference position.

Tape head positioning apparatus that includes a head carriage frame and a parallel beam positioning structure supported by the head carriage for supporting the magnetic tape head and for variably positioning the magnetic tape head relative to the carriage along a path generally transverse to the tape travel direction. The parallel beam positioning structure includes parallel support beams secured at their ends to the head carriage. The magnetic tape head is secured between the bender beam at a location generally between their ends. In a particular embodiment of the parallel beam positioning apparatus, the parallel support beams comprise first and second resilient reed beams having their ends secured to the head carriage and configured to be deflectable in a direction transverse to the tape travel direction. A voice coil linear motor deflects the reed beams pursuant to a control signal to move the magnetic tape head along the path transverse to the tape travel direction. In a further embodiment of the parallel beam positioning apparatus, the support beams comprise first and second parallel piezoelectric bender beams having their ends secured to the head carriage and configured to deflect in a direction transverse to the tape travel direction in response to a control signal. Deflection of the bender beams pursuant to the control signal displaces the magnetic tape head along the path transverse to the tape travel direction.

The apparatus includes a bracket that is adjustably coupled to the base plate, the bracket carrying a magnetic head for reading and writing to a tape transported by the tape path components. Adjustment couplings couple the bracket to the base plate and are lockably settable to adjust and lock the spatial orientation of the magnetic head with respect to a tape transported by the tape path components. Pre-loaded jackscrews of the adjustment couplings are rotated to adjust and lock the azimuth and zenith settings for the magnetic head. A separate penetration screw independently controls the penetration of the magnetic head into the path of the magnetic tape.

The invention provides a device to facilitate precise positioning of a tape head at a particular track on a magnetic tape. Typically, the magnetic tape is adapted to be received in a drive assembly which has a memory and a motor. The device includes a mounting tray for receiving the tape drive assembly, and a laser beam emitted from a laser source. On the tape head of the device, a reflector is positioned and moves with the tape head. Beam directors are provided to ensure that the laser beam passes from the laser source to the reflector. The distance traveled by the tape head from a predetermined point to a position adjacent a track on the magnetic tape is accurately measured, and the extent of movement of the motor required to move the tape head through such a distance is also measured. Thereafter, the measurements are programmed into the tape drive assembly memory.
