An optical cross-connect apparatus that realizes high throughput in optical cross-connection by performing large-scale switching. An input optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal into wavelengths the number of which is equal to the number of WDM signals, compresses the pulse widths of the WDM signals by dividing the pulse widths by the number of the wavelengths contained in each input WDM signal, and performs a phase shift so that the phases of a plurality of compressed signal will not be the same. A wavelength switching section includes passive optical devices and distributes the optical signals processed by the input optical signal processing section according to wavelengths. An output optical signal processing section converts wavelengths contained in the optical signals distributed by the wavelength switching section into wavelengths recognized from the phases of the optical signals, expands the pulse widths of the optical signals, and outputs WDM signals.

The invention relates to a method of activating an optical communication system comprising a plurality of optical amplifiers having an optical amplifier, between optical transmission lines in which wavelength-division multiplex optical signals are transmitted. The method comprises steps of: generating a desired slope in a desired wavelength range of a gain wavelength curve of the optical amplifier; adjusting an output of the optical amplifier to a desired output level; performing the above two steps in a plurality of optical repeater stations, the steps being carried out in sequence from the first to the last optical repeater stations; and adjusting a level in each optical signal in the wavelength-division multiplex optical signal so as to have substantially constant optical signal-to-noise ratios in the optical signals to be received. Activating the optical communication system according to this procedure allows proper execution of gain slope compensation, output control, and pre-emphasis control.

An optical amplifying apparatus of the present invention comprises a correction part for correcting a predetermined fixed value of an output optical level by a correction amount according to an optical power of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). The correction amount is, for example, computed by predetermined formulas. According to the present invention, when a WDM optical signal is optically amplified, the output is fixedly amplified for each channel by the correction amount which is a value obtained with the ASE levels taken into consideration, so that a fluctuation in the level of the average optical power of the channels is suppressed even if an optical signal is dropped/added therefrom/thereto during repeated transmissions.

It is the objective of the present invention to resolve the limitations on transmission capacity and distance in a system by means of a simple design, through the provision of a means for restraining the deterioration in transmission characteristics that is the result of accumulation over the entire system of third order dispersion in the optical fiber. In the present invention, there is provided an optical fiber transmission path in which positive dispersion fibers 40,46,52, and 54 and negative dispersion fibers 42,48 (referred to as optical fibers hereinafter), which have at least second and third order dispersion of mutually opposite signs, are combined. In addition, the optical fiber is disposed so that the average third order dispersion value on the transmission path overall is reduced, and so the length of each optical fiber is sufficiently smaller than the square root of the product of the second order dispersion length, which is determined from the second order dispersion value of the optical fiber and the pulse width of the signal, and the non-linear length, which is determined from the average power of the signal within the optical fiber and the optical fiber nonlinear coefficient.

A frequency spectrum analyzing apparatus for performing a frequency spectrum analysis with respect to a detected value of an operating parameter of an internal combustion engine in synchronism with rotation of the engine, is provided. The operating parameter is sampled at predetermined time intervals, and a sampled value is converted to a digital value. Intensities of first and second elements are calculated with respect to a predetermined number of the sampled values. The first elements and second elements respectively correspond to a plurality of frequency components contained in the detected value, and a phase of the second element differs from a phase of the first element by 90 degrees. Frequency component intensities corresponding to the plurality of frequency components are calculated in synchronism with rotation of the engine, using the first element intensities and the second element intensities. The frequency component intensities are calculated by replacing a part of an integrated value of the first element intensities, and a part of an integrated value of the second element intensities respectively with corresponding preceding calculated values, when an rotational speed of the engine is higher than or equal to a set threshold value.
