    摘要: An oil-based drilling mud which comprises:(a) a hydrocarbon liquid substantially immiscible in water;(b) about 1 to about 100 parts by weight of water per 100 parts of the hydrocarbon liquid;(c) about 2 to about 50 lb/bbl. of at least one emulsifier;(d) about 0.5 to about 5 lb/bbl. of a wetting agent;(e) about 50 to about 750 lb/bbl. of a weighting agent;(f) about 0.1 to about 25 lb/bbl. of a water insoluble, oil soluble terpolymer, said terpolymer having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a methyl group, wherein R.sub.2 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.3 H.sub.5, C.sub.6 H.sub.4 --CH.sub.3, C.sub.6 H.sub.4 (CH.sub.3).sub.2 and CnH.sub.2n+1, wherein n=1 to 30 and R.sub.4 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.5 H.sub.4 N, CnH.sub.2n NH.sub.3 and CnH.sub.2n N(CH.sub.3).sub.3, wherein n=1 to 30 and x is about 40 to about 98 mole percent, y is about 1 to about 50 mole percent, and z is about 1 to about 50 mole percent, wherein y and z are less than 60 mole percent, and M is an amine or a metal cation selected from the group consisting of aluminum, iron, lead, Groups IA, IIA, IVA, VIA, VIIA, VIIIA, IB and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements.

    摘要: The instant invention relates to a process for controlling the viscosity of organic liquids by incorporating in said liquid a minor amount of polymer complex, and optionally a cosolvent for the ionic groups of said polymer. The polymer complex comprises the reaction product of a metal neutralized sulfonated polymer and a basic nitrogen-containing polymer, wherein the polymer complex is substantially soluble in said organic liquid, and pendant sulfonate groups which are substantially insoluble in said organic liquid. The optional cosolvent is selected which will solubilize the pendant sulfonate groups and provide a reasonably homogeneous mixture of solvent, cosolvent and polymer complex. The preferred compositions prepared by the method of the instant invention comprise an organic liquid having a solubility parameter of from 6 to 10.5 in combination with a polymer complex containing from 0.2 up to 10.0 mole % sulfonate groups and nitrogen-containing groups, and optionally a nonvolatile alcohol or amine cosolvent.

    摘要: This invention relates to thermoplastic and/or elastomer blend compositions having a viscosity at 200.degree. C., at 0.73 sec.sup.-1 of about 5000 to about 5.times.10.sup.6 poises, wherein the compositions used for elastomeric articles which include a polymer complex of a neutralized sulfonated polymer and a polymer containing basic nitrogen atoms can also include about 25 to about 150 parts by weight of a nonpolar process oil per 100 parts of the polymer complex and about 50 to 300 parts by weight of a filler per 100 parts of the polymer complex. These blend compositions can be processed on conventional plastic fabrication equipment into polymeric articles having excellent physical properties.

    摘要: A process for increasing the viscosity of a hydrocarbon organic liquid under increasing shear rate which includes the step of:(a) forming a solution of said hydrocarbon organic liquid and a polyampholyte having about 1 to about 500 milliequivalents of sulfonate groups per 100 gms. of said polyampholyte, wherein the concentration of said polyampholyte is about 0.01 to about 20 wt. %, said polyampholyte having the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is about 40 to about 98 mole %, y is about 1 to about 50 mole %, and z is about 1 to about 50 mole %, wherein y and z are less than 60 mole %, and M is an amine or a metal cation selected from the group consisting of aluminum, iron, lead, Groups IA, IIA, IB and IIB of the Periodic Table of Elements; and(b) subjecting said solution to increasing shear rate to increase the viscosity of said solution by at least 10% as said shear rate increases.
