An apparatus and method for determining network association status includes a first electronic device having a wireless communication system and a proximity system, and a second electronic device having a wireless communication system and a proximity system. The wireless communication systems of the first and second electronic devices have a communication range therebetween greater than an interaction range between the proximity systems of the first and second electronic devices. The proximity system of one of the first and second electronic devices is configured to interact with the proximity system of the other of the first and second electronic devices to determine proximity between the first and second electronic devices. The communication system of the first electronic device is configured to establish an association status communication with the communication system of the second electronic device after the proximity of the first and second electronic devices has been determined. Further, one of the first and second electronic devices is configured to notify an operator of an association status of the first and second electronic devices.

In one embodiment, a method of determining a staged topology for a communication network including a plurality of nodes includes identifying a plurality of topologies comprising different subsets of available communication links among the nodes, associating a connection matrix with each identified topology, establishing one or more sequences of topologies using the identified topologies, multiplying the connection matrices associated with the topologies in each sequence of topologies to obtain a sequenced connection matrix corresponding with each sequence of topologies, multiplying each sequenced connection matrix by a weighting matrix to obtain a total cost matrix corresponding with each sequence of topologies, and selecting one of the sequences of topologies as the staged topology based on the total cost matrices corresponding with each sequence of topologies.

Systems and/or methods for relaying messages between nodes in a network (e.g. a wireless network) are provided. In accordance with certain exemplary embodiments, substantially simultaneous communications between nodes may be accomplished. At least one secondary message may be piggybacked onto a primary message. Messages in the network may be queued and sent from a transmitter to at least one receiver based at least in part on the signal-to-noise ratio(s) of the receiver nodes with respect to the transmitter. The queuing of the messages may be performed in dependence on a link set that indicates which messages are capable of piggyback communications. Thus, it may be possible to realize a network that reduces collision problems, reduces delays in communications, and/or increases throughput.

This method may be performed by an Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) inserted between an Ethernet PHY layer and Ethernet MAC layer on a Network Interface Card of a host device. In particular, automated machinery control systems using the Ethernet protocol for networking are intended to benefit from the prioritizing method and implementation.

Particularly, the patient communications device includes a patient quality of service (QoS) manager that dynamically specifies a set of data quality management parameters for transporting at least some of the health information and modifies at least some of the health information into value factored health information. Additionally, the system includes a specialist communications device communicatively coupled to the patient communication device over the communications network. The specialist communications device includes a specialist QoS manager that provides measured channel characteristics to the patient communications device. The patient QoS manager dynamically specifies the set of data quality management parameters based at least in part on the measured channel characteristics of the specialist communications device.
