An apparatus and process is provided for improved asphaltene separation from heavy hydrocarbon or bitumen with low process complexity through mass transfer using solvent and counter-current flows, with three sections: an upper DAO/solid-asphaltene separation zone, a middle solvent mixing and segregation zone, and a bottom clarification zone. Solvent mixed with heavy hydrocarbon forms a process feed introduced to the process vessel's upper zone and exposed to counter-current solvent removing DAO from solid asphaltene particles in the feed, the particles fall through the middle zone and are mixed with introduced solvent, which introduced solvent segregates DAO-rich solution in the upper zone (for extraction from that zone) from solvent-rich mixtures in the middle mixing and lower clarification zones. Solvent flows and precipitate movement are controlled to optimize mass transfer in process, resulting in high DAO recovery and dry, solid asphaltene product.

A liquid-liquid extraction device and method for operating the same is disclosed. The device includes first and second conduits in flow communication with each other via a common wall having a large number of perforations. The second conduit includes an outer tube wall having a plurality of perforations leading to the outside of the device. When liquid in the first conduit is subjected to a pressure higher than that of the second conduit, and the pressure of the liquid in the second conduit is higher than that of the ambient pressure, liquid will be allowed to flow from the first conduit via perforations in the common wall into the second conduit so as to intermingle with the liquid in the second conduit. The resultant mixture in the second conduit is then ejected to the outside as a fine liquid jet via the perforations in the outer tube wall. The first and second conduits are constructed of a liquid-tight, elastically resilient material being non-swelling in contact with organic extraction solvents.

The apparatus shown is for washing a liquid such as a nitrated product with another liquid immiscible with it and having a different specific gravity. Washing liquid, such as water, to which an alkali has been added, introduced at 5, and nitroglycerine introduced at 4 are mixed in an injector 3 with the help of compressed air introduced at 6. The mixture passes into a chamber 1 where the air maintains vigorous movement before discharge at 9. The liquid mixture passes between plates 7 forming an angle of between 45 degrees and 60 degrees with the horizontal and spaced apart by a distance small (e.g. 5 mm.) compared with their extent into an intermediate compartment 8 and thence through openings 12 in a wall 10 into a separating chamber 11. From the latter the washing liquid overflows at 16 and the nitroglycerine at 15. The lower end of the separating chamber 11 communicates with an inspection glass 13 ; a layer h e of mixed liquids separating the two liquids may be maintained at the level of this glass by adjusting the height H between the overflow levels 15 and 16, for example with interchangeable nozzles.
