Non conductive supports flank the mounting location of ribs for a wire wrap screen so as to limit penetration into the wire being fed over the ribs and resistance welded notwithstanding variations of applied force from the weld roller. Optionally the wire can be pre-rolled to approximately its end diameter in the finished screen ahead of the time it contacts a rib so as to minimize bending the wire over the rib which thins the wire. The supports are preferably ceramic and provide equal penetration of the rib into the wrap wire despite variations in loading by the weld roller.

An apparatus for making a reinforcing cage as disclosed. The apparatus has a former for receiving a plurality of longitudinally extending reinforcing rods and the former is rotatably received on a bed carried by a frame. An unloading module is located adjacent the former and has a shuttle for moving towards the former for feeding rods into the former and away from the former for withdrawing the rods as a cage is made. A feed is present adjacent the former for directing a reinforcing rod against the rod as they are withdrawn from the former to allow the spiral rod to be welded to the longitudinal rods as to produce a reinforcing cage.

A machine for the manufacture of reinforcing bodies for concrete pipes and the like, which comprises longitudinal bars and wire wound about the longitudinal bars. Two coaxial, synchronously driven discs are provided. A first disc carries radially displaceable guide pieces as a welding rest for the longitudinal bars. A welding device is mounted on a transversely moveable welding carriage and makes welds successively on the longitudinal bars. The guide pieces and the welding device are adjustable automatically and continuously over the total radial stroke given with a first disc of specific diameter. Traction lines guided by rollers in the longitudinal direction engage the guide pieces. An axially directed hydraulic cylinder drives the traction lines and a transversely directed hydraulic cylinder, synchronized with the axially directed cylinder, drives the welding carriage. It is consequently possible to produce in succession reinforcing bodies of selected diameters without loss of time for changeover.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the manufacture of a screw-line shaped reinforcement spiral out of metal wire for the reinforcement of concrete pipes or columns. The wire is, while subject to tensile stress, wound onto a cylindrical last whose diameter is equal to the inner diameter of the spiral. The wire, before coming onto the last, passes over a roll that prestresses the wire to a curve of such a small diameter that, after the wire has been taken off the curve, a tension tending to bend the wire in the direction of bending of the reinforcement spiral remains in the wire. The winding takes place so that at the immediate proximity of the initial end of the last the wire passes over rolls. The first roll, whose projection is partly outside the projection of the mantle of the last and which gives the wire a curve radius smaller than the radius of the last, makes a tension bending in the wire in the direction of bending of the reinforcement spiral which bended remain in the wire. The subsequent rolls whose projections are inside the mantle of the last or are in contact with same, jointly provide a curvature whose curve radius is at the beginning larger than the radius of the last but becomes gradually smaller and, at the last roller becomes the same. The wire is wound onto the last as guided by rolls placed at the initial end of the last and positioned radially in relation to the last. The rolls provide the winding with an opening tension effective in the axial direction of the spiral, because the rise of the winding is at the beginning or at a part of the first winding, larger than the diameter of the wire but after a few windings, the rise is the same as the diameter of the wire. One or some of these last-mentioned windings are pressed against the last by means of a roll. The roll is, at the end of the roll facing towards the final end of the last, provided with a flange that penetrates between the windings and thereby causes gliding of the windings placed behind the flange on the last by the width of the flange and at the same time bending the windings in the axial direction of the spiral.

A space framework comprises two multi-wire systems of spirally-wound wires, the wires which, in the one system, are wound in the one direction, and, in the other system, are wound in the other direction, being interconnected at points where they intersect. In the manufacturing process, the wires in both systems are wound simultaneously in opposite directions during simultaneous advancement. In this instance, the wires are stretched and shaped about a forming device. The wires are then interconnected at those points where, in the winding operation, they intersect at the outer contour of the space framework.A machine for manufacturing a space framework consists of magazines for supplying the wires in both systems, for winding purposes, a templating and welding device for the wound wires, and an advancement means for the space framework produced at the templating and welding device.

A transverse filament is wound in the form of coils round a group of longitudinally extending filaments which are parallel to an axis. The winding of the transverse filament is accompanied, toward the end of the winding, by a corrugation of the transverse filament so as to produce at the end of the lattice structure an end portion which can be expanded radially of the axis. The lattice structure is of particular utility as a reinforcement for a concrete pipe having a socket at one end.
