The mulch self-degrades in a short period of time, becoming a compostable material that enriches the soil, avoiding the collecting and cleaning tasks that are necessary in conventional mulches.

The first material comprises a cellulose based material, for example, shredded recycled paper fibers, including, but not limited to, newsprint. The second material comprises a shredded wheat straw. Tackifiers and surfactants may be incorporated. The fiber mulch may be bailed or pelleted.

A combination hydro straw mulch is used for hydroseeding and hydromulching for seed establishment and erosion control. The formulation of the mulch is preferably, but not limited to, approximately 85% hammermilled straw, approximately 10% hammermilled paper, and approximately 5% processed jute fibers. The hammermilled straw is preferably Kentucky Bluegrass straw. The hammermilled paper particles are used for its water holding capacity. The paper aids in pumpability and reduces the amount of water required for pumping a quantity of mulch. The processed jute fibers tangle the straw fibers on the ground to produce a secure ground covering. The hydro straw mulch of the present invention may include other additives as well. Tackifiers and flocculants aid pumpability and help tack the straw fibers to the ground and aid in water infiltration and water clarity. A surfactant ensures wettability. Other additives include green dye.

Convenience in American lives promotes business. Gardening often requires weeding, fertilizing and watering on a regular basis. The frequency of these tasks is weather and climate dependant. The dryer climates of the Southwest require daily watering of gardens. Dry fertilizers are washed away with excessive watering. A single product that minimizes weeding, eliminates fertilizing, eliminates the need to apply mulch and reduces watering, while providing a biodegradable product has been invented.

A dry mixture for use with water has been developed to be used as an erosion control spray matrix for reducing erosion of sandy soils while awaiting development of a root system of plants to hold the soil in place. The dry erosion control mixture includes alpha-calcined calcium sulfate hemihydrate, a non-gypsum binder polymer; biodegradable fibers; and wood fiber mulch. An erosion control slurry is applied to an area of soil in need of erosion-control. After obtaining the dry erosion control mixture, it is mixed with water to form erosion control slurry. The ratio of the composition to the water is preferably from about 1:8 to about 1:12. Seed is distributed over the soil and the erosion control slurry is applied over the distributed seed.

A process and system for producing sterilized shredded material such as mulch or compost introduces a sterilant during a grinder stage for forming the shredded material, wherein the sterilant is presented by introduction with water via a spray bar at the grinder stage. The grinder stage may have a preliminary first (initial) grinder stage. The process may include shearing wood parts to a uniform size prior to the first grinder stage. The resulting shredded material can be irradiated or subjected to external heat. Testing of the resulting output shredded material can be conducted to determine the presence of mold spores, or the like and, if found, for redirecting the shredded material to the grinder stage associated with the sterilant.
