Compositions and methods for resisting soil erosion are shown. The compositions comprise either an aqueous mixture of a polymer mixed with an organic material or, alternatively, a polymer and organic material that can be mixed in water. The polymer preferably comprises polyacrylamide having anionic functional groups and the organic base comprises either cellulose, mulch and/or seed, and/or mulch. The methods of the present invention comprise providing or forming an aqueous mixture of the compositions of the present invention and applying them to an area of land sought to be provided with soil erosion resistance.

A combination hydro straw mulch is used for hydroseeding and hydromulching for seed establishment and erosion control. The formulation of is preferably, but not limited to, approximately 85% hammermilled straw, approximately 10% hammermilled paper, and approximately 5% processed jute fibers. The hammermilled straw is preferably Kentucky Bluegrass straw. The hammermilled paper particles are used for its water holding capacity. The paper aids in pumpability and reduces the amount of water required for pumping a quantity of mulch. The processed jute fibers tangle the straw fibers on the ground to produce a secure ground covering. The hydro straw mulch of the present invention may include other additives as well. Tackifiers and flocculants aid pumpability and help tack the straw fibers to the ground and aid in water infiltration and water clarity. A surfactant ensures wetability. Other additives include green dye.

The present invention relates to a biodegradable composition for the preparation of table-ware, mulching film and package, which comprises: 2-6% by weight of starch; 35-45% by weight of plant powders; 20-30% by weight of calcium carbonate; 2-7% by weight of sorbitol; 7-13% by weight of polypropylene; 2-5% by weight of polyethylene; 2-6% by weight of coupling agent; 1-2% by weight of defoamer; 2-5% by weight of stearic acid; 2-6% by weight of stearate; 3-6% by weight of glycerine or epoxidized soybean oil; and 60-100 ppm photosensitizer. The present invention also relates to a method for preparing the composition, which comprises: treating a plant waste with a diluent acid, drying and pulverizing, then mixing it with starch, polypropylene, and polyethylene, sorbitol, defoamer, coupling agent, stearic acid, stearate, glycerine and photosensitizer homogeneously; and blending the mixture obtained in a double-screw extruder at a temperature of 160-180° C. to obtain the composition of the present invention.

The pelletized straw mulch is spread onto a surface to reduce soil erosion, to promote seed establishment, to promote water infiltration and retention, to promote soil stabilization and to enhance soil fertilization. Also disclosed is a novel method of using straw for soil stabilization and grass and wildflower seed enhancement.

A biodegradable mat promotes growth and health of vegetation. The mat includes a plurality of biodegradable fibers weaved into a mat sized and shaped for placement adjacent vegetation. At least one of a fertilizer and an herbicide are broadcast spread on the mat. A bittering agent is adhered to the mat, which also serves to adhere the fertilizer and/or herbicide to the mat. The resulting construction retains moisture, releases fertilizer, blocks soils from weed seeds, kills emergent weeds below the mat, and resists foraging by deer and rodents. The mat is easy to transport and handle, and installation requires considerably less labor than conventional mulch.
