Abstract: Electrostatic liquid spray coating apparatus including a rotary atomizing cup of insulative material driven by an air turbine, is provided with a semi-conductive charging device extending through the cup, the inner portion of which is proximate the inner surface of the cup for contact charging liquid coating material supplied to the rear of the cup as it flows forwardly and outwardly over the rotating cup interior and contacts the charging device prior to atomization at the forward edge of the cup. A generally cylindrical insulative support body, housing a turbine and its associated air bearing and cup drive shaft, has a reduced diameter intermediate section which provides an annular cavity in which are located liquid coating and solvent valves for controlling the flow of liquid coating and solvent to the cup. The charging means in the cup is energized via a stationary conductor which terminates in closely spaced proximity to the outer portion of the charging device on the cup exterior which is electrically connected to the inner portion of the charging device on the cup interior via a series of semi-conductive posts which form the portion of the charging device extending through the wall of the cup between its inner and outer surfaces.

Abstract: A discharge coating apparatus comprises an assembly for applying a vibrational motion in the longitudinal direction of an electrode while applying a voltage pulse in synchronization with the vibration to cause electrical discharge between the surface of a workpiece and the electrode and the formation of a coating layer on the workpiece of the material of the electrode due to the heat produced by the electrical discharge. An additional motion is applied to the electrode to cause the electrode to undergo reciprocal travel towards and away from the suirface of the workpiece at an angle relative thereto. The additional motion can be a rotational motion. The electrode can be formed with a concave portion at its tip or with an axial bore so that only an annulus of the electrode contacts the workpiece. The additional motion can be a skipping movement by utilizing a skipping mechanism consisting of an elastic memebr.

Abstract: An arc spray gun is adapted to spray coatings in confined areas. An arc spray deflector includes a nozzle body with a nozzle seat thereon and a hole therein receptive of a flow of compressed gas. A first nozzle insert is sealingly insertable in the hole and has a first flanged end with a first thickness positioned on the nozzle seat and further has an orifice therein to direct a lateral deflecting jet of the gas toward the point of contact of the arcing wires. A second nozzle insert is sealingly insertable in the hole and has a second flanged end with a second thickness. The first and the second inserts are adapted to be interchanged whereby selection of the distance from a respective exit point to the point of contact is effected.

Abstract: Uniform protective coatings are deposited on components with a high strength bond by utilizing a supersonic plasma stream and a transferred arc system of selectively reversible polarity. By maintaining plasma stream velocity at a sufficiently high Mach number, and using stream temperatures and static pressures which establish a shock pattern characteristic that diffuses the arc, the workpiece is made cathodic relative to the plasma gun at predetermined intervals. This creates a sputtering effect in which electrons and atoms are ejected from the workpiece despite the impacting plasma flow and the ambient pressure level. This sputtering action is undertaken to clean the workpiece once it is sufficiently heated and to cause intermingling of molecules of the substrate material with molecules of a deposition powder injected into the plasma flow. This preparatory deposition, together with the clean workpiece surface, enables a subsequent buildup of securely bonded and high uniform material.

Abstract: A plasma-arc spraying torch is disclosed which comprises a cathode unit and a separable anode unit which units are connected to each other approximately at a section of the torch in which the cathode of the torch is mounted on a cathode supporting member. The connection of the units and the mounting of their parts are all self-centering. Each unit has its own separate cooling circuit. Cooling of the anode nozzle is provided by a helical water duct within a nozzle holder member surrounding the anode nozzle. The nozzle holder and cathode supporting members are each at least laterally embedded in body parts of insulating material.
