Abstract:
A knife projection sensing system for cutting machines having a rotatable surface adapted to retain a plurality of cutting knives. The system employs a plurality of sensors mountable to the cutting machine to be stationary with respect to the rotatable surface. The sensors generate a signal capable of indicating the position of each cutting knife as the knives rotate past the sensors. A microprocessor in communication with the sensors analyzes the signal generated to determine the projection of each knife from a reference surface and to determine if the projection of at least one of the plurality of cutting knives deviates outside preset desirable limits. The projection status of the knives is communicated to an operator by a light display or paper printout. The system can be used to ensure that knives are correctly installed in the cutting machine and to monitor knife position during normal operation. The system can also be used to determine when knives need changing for sharpening. If the projection of the knives exceeds preset limits, the system will automatically shut down the cutting machine to prevent damage.
Abstract:
A rotary chipping head with multiple knife structures distributed about its periphery. Each knife structure includes an end-located chipping knife with a cutting edge movable in a plane disposed perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the chipping head. End-located facing knives are interspersed with the knife structures for producing a smooth face in the work being processed. Anvils preceding the facing knives produce compression in the work being processed. Detachable facing elements mount the facing knives and the anvils.
Abstract:
An improved system for clamping and retaining a cutting knife in position in an apparatus for processing wood. The apparatus includes a support surface, a cutting knife, an associated holding location on the support surface to receive the cutting knife, and a clamp member having a clamping surface to engage and hold the at least one cutting knife in the associated holding location. The improvement involves mounting the clamp member to the support surface at a pivot joint for pivotal movement of the clamp member with respect to the support surface. The clamp member has a clamping surface that extends on one side of the pivot joint and a lever arm extending on the other side of the pivot joint. An actuating member is provided to apply a force to the lever arm so that a clamping force is applied to the cutting knife through the clamping surface according to the principle of a first order lever. The pivoting clamping arrangement provides secure and reliable clamping of the cutting knives. The pivoting joint between the clamp member and the support surface tend to evenly distribute the clamping force along the length of the cutting knife for better retention of the knife.
Abstract:
The invention is based on the method for the resharpening of knives used in size-reduction machines described in U.S. Pat. No. 5,525,094 in which the knives remain installed in a rotatable knife carrier. With this invention the process has been further developed in so far as the cutting edges S are ground one after another respectively at one stop position of the knife carrier 8 in which the radial ray MS of the cutting circle with the direction mS of the grinding feed v at the knife cutting edges S encloses the clearance angle .phi.. So the invention offers the possibility to choose for the cutting edges any clearance angle matching the properties of the material to be flaked.

Abstract:
An apparatus for adjusting the relative positions of a first component and a second component of a power tool includes a drive rod which interconnects the first and second component. The drive rod has a plurality of external threads in meshing engagement with a plurality of internal threads located on one of the first and second components. An internally threaded element preferably in the form of a backlash nut is also in meshing engagement with the plurality of internal threads. A biasing member is interdisposed between the internally threaded element and one of the first and second component. In a preferred form, the apparatus is incorporated into a power tool for woodworking or metal forming and is operative for eliminating play in the threaded interconnection of the components which is most evidence upon reversal of movement of the drive rod.
Abstract:
A cutter head in a chipper that includes a rotatable hub member, and multiple knife assemblies distributed circumferentially about the rotation axis of the hub member. Each knife assembly includes a base member or holder which has multiple knives detachably clamped thereon. A base member is secured to the hub member through a groove provided in one of the members and a flange which is part of the outer member, with the flange seating within the groove.
Abstract:
A method for improving the endurance of a blade base (6) of the disc (1) of a disc chipper, a blade base and a disc chipper. A wearing plate (10) is attached to the surface (18) of the blade base facing towards the chip opening (7), the wearing surface (10) of which is shot peened.
Abstract:
A method of planing a variety of widths of workpieces includes transporting workpieces through a machining area having a rotating cutterhead that includes a series of helically mounted cutting blades spaced circumferentially on the cutterhead and positioned such that one cutting blade engages the workpiece simultaneously as another cutting blade disengages the workpiece, the transporting step including consistently arranging the workpieces with respect to the rotating cutterhead so that the dimension of each workpiece parallel with the axis of rotation of the cutterhead has a value W and the cutterhead being such that the spacing between the cutting blades being such thatW/[(.pi. D(cot .phi.))/N] is an integer, in whichD is the cutterhead diameter,N is the number of cutting blades and.phi. is the helix angle.
Abstract:
A finishing blade having a radiused cutting edge for a chipper to produce a smooth finish on a surface of a log. The blades are mounted on the chipper such that a cut produced by one blade will be overlapped by a succeeding blade. The cutting edge of the finishing blade is radius ground to a slight curvature, The curvature of the cutting edge assures that the plane of cut produced by a first blade will be intersected by a succeeding blade.
Abstract:
A disc type chipper/mulcher having multi-blade flails in which two or more blades are attached to a sleeve, and the blade/sleeve combination pivots about a post as a single unit. The flails are sharpenable and reversible, and can be mounted on the same side of the disc as the knives. The chipper/mulcher may also include disc mounted fan blades and a screen for governing the size of the processed materials.
