Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of treating or preventing kidney disease in an animal subject including administering an effective amount of C-reactive protein to the animal subject. The kidney disease may be associated with systemic lupus erythematosus.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides rapid, simple, robust and sensitive label and label-free assays for use in drug discovery, bioagent detection and medical diagnostics as well as means for reading such assays. The assays disclosed in the present disclosure use the formation, disruption and destruction of self-assembling fluorescent dye:biopolymer complexes to indicate the presence or absence of an analyte of interest. Such assays are suitable for high throughput screening and can achieve high sensitivity due to the enhanced fluorescence and changes of absorption spectra of certain dyes, particularly cyanine dyes, when they bind to specific biopolymers.
Abstract:
A distance-of-flight mass spectrometer (DOF-MS) imparts constant momentum acceleration to ions in an ion source and uses an ion mirror to enhance energy focusing. Embodiments of DOF-MS with ion mirror are shown. Further, a method of compensating for the dispersion of initial ion position and velocity in the ion source is discussed.
Abstract:
A semiconductor detector has a tunable spectral response. These detectors may be used with processing techniques that permit the creation of “synthetic” sensors that have spectral responses that are beyond the spectral responses attainable by the underlying detectors. For example, the processing techniques may permit continuous and independent tuning of both the center wavelength and the spectral resolution of the synthesized spectral response. Other processing techniques can also generate responses that are matched to specific target signatures.
Abstract:
A photodetector for use at wavelengths of 2 μm and longer has an intersubband absorption region to provide absorption at wavelengths beyond 2 μm, integrated with an avalanche multiplier region to provide low-noise gain. In one particular design, the intersubband absorption region is a quantum-confined absorption region (e.g., based on quantum wells and/or quantum dots).
Abstract:
Embodiments provide a quantum dot active structure and a methodology for its fabrication. The quantum dot active structure includes a substrate, a plurality of alternating regions of a quantum dot active region and a strain-compensation region, and a cap layer. The strain-compensation region is formed to eliminate the compressive strain of an adjacent quantum dot active region, thus allowing quantum dot active regions to be densely-stacked. The densely-stacked quantum dot active region provides increased optical modal gain for semiconductor light emitting devices such as edge emitting lasers, vertical cavity lasers, detectors, micro-cavity emitters, optical amplifiers or modulators.
Abstract:
The present invention relates generally to molecular assemblies, more particularly to an assay for the detection of G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) molecular assemblies and bead-based detection of ligand-GPCR complexes and to methods for identifying compounds as agonists, partial agonists or antagonists of the binding of G-protein coupled receptors to G-protein and for use of these compounds in the treatment of conditions or disease states in a mammalian subject or patient, including humans, where G-protein coupled receptor binding to G-protein is implicated.

Abstract:
An electrocatalyst comprises a crumpled transition metal dichalcogenide support loaded with catalytic metal nanoparticles through spontaneous reduction reactions. The support can be prepared by hydrothermal conversion of 2D nanosheets to 3D hierarchically crumpled sheets. As an example, using crumpled MoS2 as a support, highly tunable Ru loadings were obtained using the electrostatic interaction between MoS2 and RuCl3 in solution. Control over Ru loading was leveraged to produce Ru—MoS2 electrocatalysts that demonstrate different nitrogen reduction reaction activities, and which show varying resistance to electrochemical sintering and deactivation. Further, these high surface area materials can be utilized for many applications, including electrocatalysts, supercapacitors, and batteries.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to substituted stilbenes and dienones which exhibit unexpected dual activity, as inhibitors of NFKB and as agonists (activators) of Nrf2. In particular, these compounds show dual activity and it has been discovered that these compounds are particularly useful in the treatment of certain cosmetic applications and in rejuvenating and beautifying skin and other keratinous tissue of a subject in need. Cosmetic compositions and methods of using said compositions in combination with other components are disclosed herein.
