Abstract: A method is described for measuring an object using a machine tool and a scanning probe. The scanning probe is driven along a scan path relative to the object whilst the scanning probe acquires probe data describing a series of positions on the surface of the object relative to the scanning probe. The scan path includes at least a first scan path segment for producing probe data that can be analysed to measure the object. The scan path is also arranged to impart a plurality of identifiable probe motions to the scanning probe that can be identified from the acquired probe data alone. Each identifiable probe motion is used to define a time stamp. This allows the probe data to be tied to commanded or nominal positions around the scan path.

Abstract: A non-Cartesian coordinate positioning machine that includes an extendable leg assembly for positioning a component such as a measurement probe within a working volume of the machine. The extendable leg assembly includes a first member and a second member which move relative to one another when the extendable leg assembly changes length. Abstract: An apparatus and methods for generating geometric data for use in an additive manufacturing process. The apparatus includes a processing unit. The processing unit may be arranged for receiving data defining surface geometry of a plurality of objects to be built together in an additive manufacturing process, providing a user interface that allows a user to define a location of each object within a common build volume and carrying out a slicing operation on at least one of the objects located in the common build volume independently from another one of objects located in the common build volume. The slicing operation determines sections of the at least one object to be built in the additive manufacturing process. In one embodiment, the objects are defined in a hierarchical data structure. Supports for supporting the objects during the build may be defined with reference to a 2-dimensional support cross-section.

Abstract: A calibration device (30) for a machine tool is described that includes a base (36) attachable to a machine tool and a calibration artefact (32), such as a sphere of known radius. A deflection mechanism attaches the calibration artefact to the base and allows movement of the calibration artefact (32) relative to the base (36) when an external force is applied to the calibration artefact (32). The deflection mechanism also maintains the calibration artefact (32) in a defined rest position relative to the base (36) in the absence of an applied external force. A sensor (46) is provided for sensing the extent of movement of the calibration artefact (32) relative to the base (36). A method of using the device (30) with a reference tool to accurately determine a position of a calibration artefact (32) is also described.

Abstract: This invention concerns an additive manufacturing apparatus for building an object by consolidating material in a layer-by-layer manner using an energy beam. The additive manufacturing apparatus comprising an optical module for steering a laser beam onto the material and for collecting light generated by an interaction of the laser beam with the material. The optical module comprises a beam splitter angled relative to an optical path shared by the laser beam and the collected light. The beam splitter separates the collected light from a path of the laser beam for directing the collected light to a detector. The optical module further comprises a corrective optical element for correcting for at least one optical aberration introduced into the collected light by the beam splitter.
