Abstract:
A lightweight projectile having an integrated driving band positioned around the exterior of the polymer base of the projectile for engaging the rifling of a barrel to impart spin stabilization to the projectile. The driving band protrudes from the polymer base to minimize the contact between the polymer base and the rifling to reduce friction between the barrel and the projectile as the projectile is fired. The reduced friction allows the lightweight projectile to be propelled with minimal propellant force while still retaining the ballistic advantages of a spin stabilized projectile.
Abstract:
A guard assembly for a tool is provided. The guard assembly has a body with a first open end, a second open end and a mid portion between the first open end and the second open end. The body forms an inner passage between the first open end and the second open end. The passage is configured to receive a portion of a tool. The body has a plurality of spaced slots. Each slot extends from the first open end a select distance to the mid portion of the body. The body has a port and a plurality of openings proximate the second open end to allow air or fluid passage.
Abstract:
An application tip and method for dispensing sealant into a countersunk hole, the tip having a hollow housing or body with an open end and a closed end; open end configured to be removably attached to and in fluid communication with a sealant source; closed end including a nozzle terminating in cylindrical member having a plurality of passages or fluid outlet openings.
Abstract:
A precursor formulation of an energetic composition with improved electrostatic charge dissipation, including an amorphous carbon black having a specific surface area of at least about 1,200 m2/g, in an amount from about 0.05% by weight to about 0.25% by weight. Also disclosed is a precursor formulation of a propellant composition with improved electrostatic charge dissipation. The amorphous carbon black having a specific surface area of at least about 1,200 m2/g may enhance the electrostatic charge dissipation of the HTPB-based propellant composition, without affecting the breakdown voltage of the propellant composition.
Abstract:
A precursor formulation of a liner comprising a polymer and at least two curatives. One of the at least two curatives comprises a more reactive curative and the other of the at least two curatives comprises a less reactive curative. The more reactive curative is formulated to crosslink the polymer. A method of lining a rocket motor is also disclosed, as is a rocket motor including the liner.
Abstract:
A dome connector for a flywheel rim to shaft attachment is provided. The dome connector includes a helically wound composite band that extends from a first port to a second port. The helically wound composite band has a helical angle in relation to a line perpendicular to a center of axis of the dome connector. The helical angle is selected to at least in part achieve a desired stiffness in the dome connector.
Abstract:
Disclosed herein are systems and methods for vortex tube desulfurization of jet fuels. Also disclosed are processes for separation of closely boiling species in a mixture of miscible fluids.
Abstract:
Gas generators may be utilized for launching a projectile. Launch tubes may include gas generators. Methods of launching a projectile may include utilizing gas generators to impart an initial velocity to a projectile.
Abstract:
A muzzle-loader bullet system includes a pre-packaged propellant charge and primer for providing efficient loading and unloading of the muzzleloader. The muzzleloader accepts in the breech end the propellant containment vessel that abuts against a constriction portion with a reduced diameter portion. The propellant containment vessel having an end portion with a tapered surface that conforms to the constriction portion surface. A projectile is inserted in the muzzle end and seats against the constriction portion. The propellant containment vessel may be received in a removable breech plug. The constriction portion may be part of the breech plug or a separate component secured in the barrel by way of the breech plug. The containment vessel further comprises a primer mechanism that may be integrated into the proximal end of the containment vessel.
Abstract:
A two-phase heat transfer system includes an evaporator, a condenser, a vapor line, and a liquid return line. The evaporator includes a liquid inlet, a vapor outlet, and a capillary wick having a first surface adjacent the liquid inlet and a second surface adjacent the vapor outlet. The condenser includes a vapor inlet and a liquid outlet. The vapor line provides fluid communication between the vapor outlet and the vapor inlet. The liquid return line provides fluid communication between the liquid outlet and the liquid inlet. The wick is substantially free of back-conduction of energy from the second surface to the first surface due to an increase in a conduction path from the second surface to the first surface and due to suppression of nucleation of a working fluid from the second surface to the first surface to promote liquid superheat tolerance in the wick.
