Abstract: A heat exchanger has a turbulating insert arranged between a pair of plates. The turbulating insert is permeable to fluid flow in both a high-pressure-drop direction and a low-pressure drop direction. One portion of the turbulating insert has the high-pressure-drop direction oriented at a non-zero angle to the high-pressure-drop direction of another portion. A method of making the heat exchanger includes forming a turbulating insert, removing a portion of the turbulating insert to create a cavity within the turbulating insert, placing the remaining turbulating insert into a stamped first plate, and placing the removed portion of the turbulating insert into the cavity at a non-zero angle of rotation relative to the remaining turbulating insert.

Abstract: A flat tube for a heat exchanger is fabricated from a single sheet of metal material. The sheet of metal material has a first edge and a second edge, which are arranged adjacent to one another between a pair of broad walls of the tube. Flat sections extend from the edges and are disposed against one another. A pair of rounded walls arranged at an end of the tube connect the flat sections to the broad walls, and are joined by a weld bead within a space bounded by the outer surfaces of the rounded walls.

Abstract: A heat exchanger includes first and second sets of parallel arranged tubes. The first set of tubes extends along a first arcuate path, the second set of tubes extends along a second arcuate path, and each one of the second set of tubes is aligned in a common plane with a corresponding one of the first set of tubes. Corrugated fin segments are arranged in spaces between adjacent tubes, and crests and troughs of the corrugated fin segments are joined to broad and flat faces of the tubes. In making the heat exchanger, the material of the corrugated fin segment is intermittently slit to define breaking points prior to arranging the corrugated fin segment between the tubes.

Abstract: An air fin for a heat exchanger has air channels defined by corrugations, the corrugations having generally planar flanks joined by alternating crests and troughs. Perforations extend through portions of at least some of the flanks and are aligned within two spaced apart planes. A rectangular aperture extends through at least two consecutive ones of the corrugations, and is bounded by the two planes. A method of making the air fin includes forming perforations into a continuous strip of metal sheet at regular intervals, corrugating the strip to form crests and troughs between the perforations, and punching out a portion of the strip at regular intervals. The punching out includes shearing webs between the perforations, and results in the formation of the rectangular aperture.

Abstract: A method is provided to vaporize a working fluid using a heat sourcing fluid. A first portion of the heat sourcing fluid passes through the first section, in counter-flow with the working fluid. Both the first and second portions pass through the third section, in overall counter-flow with the working fluid. The working fluid passes sequentially through the third section, the first section, and the second section. Abstract: The invention relates to an indirect-type air cooler by way of which compressed charge air for an internal-combustion engine is cooled by means of a liquid, wherein the air cooler is constructed from stacked pairs of plates having fins which are disposed therebetween, and the brazed stack is disposed in a housing into which the charge air flows, flows through the fins and exits the housing again. The charge air exchanges heat with the liquid which flows in the plate pairs and which is introducible into the plate pairs via at least one inlet and via inlet-side plate openings which are flush in the stack and is dischargeable via at least one outlet by means of flush outlet-side plate openings. In order to further improve the performance potential of the air cooler, at least one venting element which extends to the exterior through an opening of the housing is connected to a liquid space within the stack.

Abstract: An engine system with exhaust gas recirculation includes a combustion engine, a flow mixer, and a turbocharger. An exhaust flow path and a charge air flow path each extend to an inlet of the flow mixer, and a mixed gas flow path extends between the outlet of the flow mixer and an intake manifold of the engine. A charge air heat exchanger is arranged along the charge air flow path to cool the charge air, and a mixed gas heat exchanger is arranged along the mixed gas flow path to cool mixed charge air and recirculated exhaust gas. The exhaust gas recirculation flow path does not extend through any heat exchangers.
