Abstract: The invention relates to an internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft, one or more cylinders including a cylinder head, a piston, a combustion chamber, one or more intake valves, one or more exhaust valves, an intake system configured for feeding intake air to the engine, an exhaust system configured for conveying exhaust gas away from the engine, a pressure charging system connected to the intake system and an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system arranged to feed branched off exhaust gas from the exhaust system to the intake system via an EGR conduit wherein: * the internal combustion engine includes a valve actuation device configured to allow for late or early closing of the intake valves in accordance with late or early Miller-type valve timing, and wherein * the EGR system includes a gas feeding device configured to feed exhaust gas through the EGR conduit in modes of operation wherein the pressure in the intake system exceeds the pressure in the exhaust system, * wherein the gas feeding device is a displacement pump and wherein the gas feeding device is arranged so that exhaust gas recirculating in the EGR system during operation of the engine passes the gas feeding device before being mixed with intake air in the intake system. Additionally, a method of improving efficiency of an internal combustion engine is described.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for an exhaust system. In one example, the exhaust system includes an aftertreatment device and a recirculation passage. A recirculation valve is positioned in the recirculation passage and configured to control an amount of recirculated exhaust gas flowing through the recirculation passage to the aftertreatment device. The exhaust system further includes a diverter valve configured to control a flow of engine exhaust gases to different portions of a catalyst of the aftertreatment device.

The supervisory controller may receive system control variable set points and coordinate component control variable set points for the components to achieve the system control variable set points. The component controllers may control operation of the components to achieve the control variable set points for the components by setting manipulated variable set points for the components based on the component control variable set points and a model based non-linear dynamic inversion.

Abstract: A method of operating an exhaust gas recirculation pump for an internal combustion engine including: providing an EGR pump assembly including an electric motor coupled to a roots device having rotors, the EGR pump operably connected to an internal combustion engine; providing an EGR control unit lined to the EGR pump assembly; providing sensors linked to the EGR control unit; determining if a motor speed is within a predetermined target (step SI), wherein when the motor speed is within the predetermined target then; determining if a motor torque is within a predetermined target (step S2) wherein when the motor torque is within the predetermined target then; determining if a motor temperature is within a predetermined target (step S3) wherein when the motor temperature is within the predetermined target then; maintaining operation of the exhaust gas recirculation pump.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for operating a split exhaust engine system that provides blowthrough air and exhaust gas recirculation to an intake passage via a first exhaust manifold and exhaust gas to an exhaust passage via a second exhaust manifold. In one example, during a cold start, a method may include adjusting a position of a first valve disposed in an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) passage based on an engine operating condition, the EGR passage coupled between the first exhaust manifold coupled to a first set of exhaust valves and the intake passage, upstream of a compressor. As one example, the engine operating condition may include an engine temperature or a temperature of a catalyst disposed in the exhaust passage.

Abstract: A system and method is provided for controlling an electric machine rotatably coupled to a rotatable shaft of an electronically-controlled one of a turbocharger and an exhaust-driven turbo supercharger fluidly coupled to an exhaust duct of an internal combustion engine. An operating temperature of a component of the engine is determined or estimated an operating temperature of a component of the engine or coupled to the engine, which is compared to a threshold temperature. The electric machine is controlled to operate as a motor in response to the determined or estimated temperature of the component being below a threshold temperature.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises a supercharger 34 having a compressor 34a and a turbine 34b and an EGR apparatus 50 having an exhaust recirculating pipe 51, an upstream EGR valve 52 and a downstream EGR valve 53. An electronic control unit 60 fully opens the upstream EGR valve 52 and controls an EGR amount by the downstream EGR valve 53 when a peak value of an exhaust pressure increases excessively. Thereby, since exhaust volume increases, the peak value of the exhaust pressure falls. Therefore, damage of parts of an exhaust system can be avoided. The electronic control unit 60 fully opens the downstream EGR valve 53 and controls the EGR amount by the upstream EGR valve 52 when the peak value of the exhaust pressure decreases excessively. Thereby, since the exhaust volume decreases, the peak value of the exhaust pressure rises. Therefore, supercharging can be continued while an EGR gas is being introduced.
