Abstract: In systems and methods for establishing communication between a wireless device and a communication network, one or more sounding signals are received from one or more relay nodes. One or more parameters of beam formation are determined based on the received one or more sounding signals. Formation of one or more beams is initiated from two or more antennas to the one or more relay nodes based on the determined one or more beam formation parameters. The total number of the formed beams and the formation of the beams are adjusted dynamically based on the received sounding signals from the relay nodes.

Abstract: A communication system where wireless devices communicating with an access node may be communicating either directly with the access node, or via a heterodyne repeater. A heterodyne repeater relays communications transparently such that operation of the access node may not provide the ability to distinguish which wireless devices are communicating directly from those that are communicating via the heterodyne repeater. The system determines whether the wireless device is communicating either directly with the access node, or via a heterodyne repeater. When a wireless device is communicating via a heterodyne repeater, the access node selects a radio resource control configuration adapted for communication via a heterodyne repeater to be used with that wireless device.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for configuring a delay based scheduler for an access node. A plurality of packets may be received at an access node, where at least a first packet is associated with an application running on a wireless device in communication with the access node. The plurality of packets may be inspected to determine that one or more of the packets associated with the application are marked, where the mark indicates network congestion. A remaining time for the first packet may be calculated based on a packet delay budget associated with the running application and the determination that one or more of the packets associated with the application are marked. The first packet may then be scheduled for transmission to the wireless device, using a delay based scheduler, based on the calculated remaining time.

Abstract: Multiple relays are different distances from their respective donor access nodes. The donor and relay path selected for a user's traffic is selected based on the priority associated with that user and a ratio of a channel quality indicator and the distance of the donor-relay link. Traffic associated with a higher priority user is routed via a path with a good channel quality indicator to distance ratio whereas traffic for other, lower QoS profile, users does not take channel quality or relay-to-donor distance into account.

Abstract: A transmit power level of a wireless device is adjusted based on an uplink interference to neighboring sectors caused by the transmit power level. The wireless device can estimate the uplink interference using a reference signal transmitted by each neighboring sector. The uplink interference is based on a loss of signal strength of the reference signal as measured at the wireless device, i.e. a path loss. A determination is made to adjust the transmit power level of the wireless device so as to improve a coverage area of the serving sector, without generating excessive interference in neighboring sectors. Consequently, a transmit power level increase is based on a function of the data demand of the wireless device, the interference caused to neighbors, and the load on neighboring sectors.
