Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method and corresponding apparatus to help manage wireless communication between a base station and a device served by the base. In accordance with the disclosure, when a base station transitions from serving the device on just a first carrier to serving the device on a combination of the first carrier and a second carrier, the base station will responsively take action to improve downlink communication to the device on the first carrier. In particular, the base station will respond to the occurrence of that transition by starting to beamform downlink transmission to the device on the first carrier.

Abstract: A method and system to help manage a wireless client device's (WCD's) network connection with a core network gateway, where the WCD provides wireless backhaul connectivity to the core network for a relay base station with which the WCD communicates over a communication interface. The WCD detects passage of a threshold period of absence of communication on the communication interface between the WCD and the relay base station, and upon detecting that threshold period of absence of communication on that communication interface, the WCD releases its network connection with the core network gateway. Further, the WCD dynamically sets the threshold inactivity period for this purpose based on history of communications with which the relay base station has served one or more other WCDs.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for a UE to expedite handover through advanced obtaining and reporting of a network identifier. The UE could detect for possible handover a target cell that a target base station provides. In response to the detecting, the UE could determine that the target base station is of a particular class of base stations and, responsive to determining that the target base station is of the particular class, could determine and report the network identifier to a source base station serving the UE. In this way, if the source base station does not have a record of the network identifier, the source base station would not need to request the UE to determine and report that identifier, and could instead use the reported network identifier as basis to engage in handover signaling to process handover of the UE to the target cell, thereby expediting handover.

Abstract: A method and system to manage coordinated transmission of data in a wireless communication system. When a serving base station receives data of a particular class for transmission to a user equipment device (UE), the serving base station transmits the received data to the UE and sends a proper subset of the received data to a neighboring base station for the neighboring base station to also transmit to the UE optimally concurrently with the serving base station's transmission of the proper subset. To help comply with a policy in place at the neighboring base station, the serving base station decides how much of the received data to send to the neighboring base station as the proper subset by (i) determining what scheduling weight the neighboring base station is set to apply for data of the particular class and (ii) applying that determined scheduling weight to the received data.

Abstract: When a first base station is serving a wireless client device (WCD), the first base station provides the WCD with a copy of the WCD context information that the first base station maintains for serving the WCD. When the WCD then experiences a radio-link failure and connects with the second base station, the WCD will forward the provided WCD context information to the second base station, for use by the second base station as a basis to serve the WCD. This process of transferring the context information through the WCD from the old base station to the new base station could help to avoid the need for the second base station to engage in direct context-transfer signaling with the first base station, which could be especially useful in a scenario where the base stations are unable to engage in that direct transfer.

Abstract: A method and system for improved management of UE service. A base station will predict that its air interface will become threshold highly loaded. And, in response to that prediction but before the predicted threshold high load occurs, the base station will proactively manage service of UEs based on a prediction of how much each UE would suffer from bearer loss if and when the predicted threshold high load occurs. For instance, the base station may predict for each UE a level of service degradation based on service value of each bearer, if any, that the UE would lose if the threshold high load occurs. And the base station may take proactive action, such as triggering a handover and/or providing an alert message, with respect to each UE whose predicted level of service degradation is threshold high.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method and system for adjusting a transport block size used for uplink transmissions from a user equipment device (UE) when engaging in uplink coordinated multipoint service (UL CoMP), under conditions in which a propagation delay to a receiving CoMP base station (BS) exceeds a threshold. Based on predicted delay reported to a serving BS from the CoMP BS, the serving BS may compute a reduced transport block size such that uplink resource blocks transmitted from the UE to the CoMP base station will be temporally under-filled by an amount corresponding to the predicted delay. As received at the CoMP BS, the under-filled resource blocks will not overrun their assigned transmission time interval (TTI), and therefore will not be a source of potential interference.

An application may query the RWHOIS server to determine the hostname of the communication device being used by the user and then query the domain name server to determine the IP address of the communication device.

Abstract: A gateway or other entity will detect when the number of relay base stations served by a relay-WCD changes and will responsively modify a configuration of a bearer that extends between the relay-WCD and the gateway. For instance, in response to detecting an increase in the number of relay base stations served by the relay-WCD, the entity could increase a guaranteed minimum bit rate and/or other quality of service level of the bearer. Or in response to detecting a decrease in the number of relay base stations served by the relay-WCD, the entity could decrease a guaranteed minimum bit rate and/or other quality of service level of the bearer.

Abstract: In an example method, a donor base station determines that an air interface, over which the donor base station serves a relay-UE and plurality of second UEs, is threshold highly congested and that a relay base station is serving a threshold high number of first UEs. The relay base station is coupled to a relay-UE that provides wireless connectivity for the relay base station and that is served by the donor base station. Responsive to at least the determining that the air interface is threshold highly congested and that the relay base station is serving a threshold high number of first UEs, the donor base station (i) selects one or more of the plurality of second UEs and (ii) hands over the selected one or more second UEs to another base station other than the donor base station.
