Abstract:
A luminaire includes a housing, a luminous zone coupled with the housing, and one or more transition zones coupled with the housing and disposed adjacent to the luminous zone. The luminous zone provides a first light to an illuminated area, and the one or more transition zones provide a second light to the illuminated area. The first light is harsher than the second light. A method of illuminating an area includes providing a first light to the area from a luminous zone of a luminaire and providing a second light to the area from one or more transition zones disposed adjacent to the luminous zone within the luminaire. The first light is a harsher light than the second light.
Abstract:
A luminaire may include a plurality of different light engines. Light engines having different light distributions can be included in a single luminaire and a subset of the light engines selectively driven to dynamically change the light distribution of the luminaire. In this way, a single luminaire is capable of illuminating an area with a variety of different light distributions.
Abstract:
Optics for asymmetrically redirecting light from one or more light engines include a dome optic, and first and second reflecting surfaces. The dome optic refracts light emitted by the light engines. The first reflecting surface redirects at least a portion of the light that is initially emitted toward a backward horizontal direction, toward the forward horizontal direction. The first reflecting surface extends substantially vertically and along a transverse horizontal direction, proximate to and behind the dome optic, and has a height greater than or equal to a height of the dome optic. The second reflecting surface reflects downwardly at least a portion of the refracted light that is initially emitted in the forward horizontal direction. The second reflecting surface is proximate to the dome optic and forward of the dome optic, and forms an angle of 45 degrees or more with respect to vertical.

Abstract:
Disclosed are optics over a light source, such as, but not limited to, an LED on a circuit board. The optic does not entirely encapsulate the LED but rather includes an inner surface such that an air gap exists between the optic and the LED. The optic may include a lens and may conform to the shape of the circuit board.

Abstract:
An LED assembly that includes optics and optical arrangements for light emitting diodes (LEDs). In some embodiments, a reflector is provided within a void between the lens and the LED. This reflector can reflect light emitted by the LED in a non-preferred direction back toward the preferred direction. In other embodiments, an optical element is formed or otherwise provided in the lens cavity and shaped so that, when the lens is positioned above the LED, the refractor bends the emitted light in a preferred direction. In some embodiments, both a reflector and optical element are provided in the LED assembly to control the directionality of the emitted light. Such embodiments of the invention can be used to increase the efficiency of an LED by ensuring that generated light is being directed to the target area of choice.
Abstract:
An optical assembly and a luminaire with extreme cutoff beam control optics. The optical assembly includes a base, a plurality of lenses, a plurality of light emitting diodes (LED) positioned to emit light into the lenses, and a reflector having a reflective surface disposed adjacent at least one of the plurality of LEDs. The optical axis of one or more of the LEDs may be offset from a central axis of the respective lens in which it emits light. The reflective surface of the reflector may extend from the base over the one or more of the LEDs and beyond the optical axis of the one or more LEDs to direct light in a desired direction or toward a selected area (e.g., a street) and cut off light directed in an undesirable direction or area (e.g., a house).
Abstract:
Disclosed herein is an optical assembly and a luminaire with extreme cutoff beam control optics. The optical assembly includes a base, a plurality of lenses disposed on the base and spaced from each other, a plurality of light emitting diodes (LED), and a reflector having a curved surface (e.g., concave shape, parabolic shape, etc.) disposed adjacent to at least one of the plurality of LEDs. A central axis of an LED may be offset from a central axis of the respective lens of the plurality of lenses. The curved surface may extend from the base and curving over the at least one of the plurality of LEDs and beyond the central axis of each of the at least one of the plurality of LEDs and direct light in a desired direction or a selected area (e.g., a street side) and cut off light in other direction (e.g., a house side).
