Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing, a handle, an elongated shaft, an end effector assembly, a drive assembly, a support, a roller, and an extension depending from the handle. The end effector assembly includes a first jaw member and a second jaw member. At least one of the jaw members is movable with respect to the other jaw member. The drive assembly includes a drive bar extending at least partially through the elongated shaft such that longitudinal translation of the drive bar causes movement of the jaw members. The extension includes a proximal surface and a channel defined therein. The proximal surface is configured to contact a portion of the drive assembly such that movement of the handle with respect to the housing causes longitudinal translation of the drive bar. The channel is positioned for mechanical engagement by the roller.

Abstract: A surgical instrument comprises an end effector including a pair of jaw members configured to move with respect to one another between an open configuration and a closed configuration for clamping tissue. At least one jaw member includes an elongate cam slot extending in a longitudinal direction over a substantial a length a tissue clamping surface of the at least one jaw member. A plurality of electrically isolated, and longitudinally spaced electrodes is supported by the tissue clamping surface and is configured to deliver electrosurgical energy to tissue. A reciprocating member engages the elongate cam slot and is extendable to a sealing position with respect to each of the electrodes to define a predetermined gap distance between a particular electrode and an opposing tissue clamping surface.

Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing, an inner shaft coupled to and extending distally from the housing, an end effector assembly disposed at a distal end of the inner shaft, an outer sheath that is fixed to the housing, extends distally from the housing, and is disposed about the inner shaft, and an insulative sleeve. The insulative sleeve is positioned between the inner shaft and the outer sheath. The insulative sleeve is movable relative to the inner shaft and the outer sheath between a storage position, wherein the insulative sleeve is positioned proximally of the end effector assembly, and a deployed position, wherein the insulative sleeve substantially surrounds the end effector assembly.

Abstract: Surgical instruments and surgical systems including the surgical instrument and a morcellator. The surgical instrument includes a tool assembly having an articulating joint and a screw positioned at a distal end of the articulating joint. The articulating joint is configured to articulate a distal portion of the tool assembly at an angle in relation to the longitudinal axis of the surgical instrument. The screw is configured to engage tissue, for example, a myoma in the uterine wall of a patient, and is configured to pitch and roll the tissue to expose cutting planes. The morcellator is configured to engage the tissue to morcellate the tissue and remove the tissue from a patient.

Abstract: A forceps includes an end effector assembly including first and second jaw members. One or both of the jaw members is movable relative to the other between a spaced-apart position and an approximated position for grasping tissue therebetween. One or both of the jaw members is configured to conduct energy between the jaw members and through tissue grasped therebetween to treat tissue. An insulative tubular member is movable relative to the end effector assembly between a retracted position, wherein the insulative tubular member is positioned proximally of the end effector assembly, and an extended position, wherein the insulative tubular member is disposed about the end effector assembly. A monopolar member is configured to apply energy to tissue to treat tissue when the insulative tubular member is disposed in the extended position.

Abstract: An electrosurgical suction coagulator is disclosed having improved thermal insulation between the active electrode and adjacent tissue. In embodiments, passive insulation is used to control the transfer of thermal energy from an electrosurgical electrode into surrounding tissue. Braided, closed-sell foam material, and open cell foam materials may be used to thermally insulate the outer surface of a suction coagulator shaft from an inner electrode. In embodiments, a suction coagulator shaft includes an external covering formed from open-cell foam material, which may be saturated with a coolant, such as water or saline, to increase the thermal mass of the shaft. In other embodiments, active cooling delivers coolant to the operative site. In yet other embodiments, a suction coagulator shaft includes a cooling jacket through which coolant is passed to actively cool the instrument. The improved electrosurgical suction coagulator disclosed herein may have a reduced operating surface temperatures which may result in reduced risk of undesirable effects to adjacent tissue, and may result in reduced operative times and improved patient outcomes.
