摘要: An apparatus for improving balancing skill which comprises a disk with threaded hole in its center and a threaded rod screwed through the threaded hole. The user stands on the disk and attempts to maintain the disk in a horizontal position, i.e., balance himself on the disk and supported on the rod. Difficulty of maintaining balance is proportional to the distance from the contact point with the floor to the hole in the center of the disk. This distance is indicated for a given position of the rod by indicia imprinted on the side of the rod. The indicia therefore gives the user the opportunity to measure the difficulty of performing the exercise and to vary the difficulty by a controlled increment.

摘要: A method and apparatus for starting mechanisms such as memory disk and head arrays driven by driving mechanisms such as motors that are initially immobilized by constraints such as stiction in disk drives wherein the system is perturbed by a succession of mechanical shocks while a moderate driving force is applied thereby degrading the strength of the restraint to a value where a moderate driving force can drive the mechanism indicating that the restraint has been overcome then increasing the driving force to a full operating value. In one embodiment, the shock is provided by a loaded spring; in another embodiment, the shock is provided by a solenoid; in another embodiment, the shock is provided by a voice coil.

摘要: A system for removing impurities from liquids wherein the liquid is forced upward through several zones, the first zone being a bundle of tubes having a helical shape to present an inclined path where settling of particulates back down the tube occurs, then through a stack of filter modules which are over the bundle of tubes and contain treatment media, the arrangement of the filter modules being such that the passage of fluid in the upward direction removes particulates before flushing through the treatment media and agitates the treatment media so as to prevent packing. The helical form of the settling tubes and the modular arrangement provides a compact and inexpensive structure and great convenience for maintenance. The preferred cross sectional shape of each tube is oval to increase settling rate. In order to form the tubes from rigid tubing, a concrete form is made in accordance with a procedure which includes forming a "tent" of strings, sculpting a plasticene negative form using the tent of strings as a guide, casting concrete against the form to produce a mold that resembles a sliding board with an outside drooping edge.

摘要: A high efficiency mixing device for mixing first and second fluids within a conduit. A biscuit element is positioned at the upstream end of the conduit having a longitudinal axis that coincides with the longitudinal axis of the conduit. The biscuit element is provided with a plurality of openings including a central opening positioned along the longitudinal axis and a plurality of additional openings spaced proximate to the central opening. The openings are provided with primary mixing elements which induce a rotational angular velocity to a first fluid passing therethrough of the same rotational sign. Second fluid feed ports are positioned within each of the openings for introducing a second fluid to the first fluid as the first fluid passes through the openings and into the conduit. Secondary and tertiary mixing elements are optionally located downstream of the biscuit element to enhance the mixing of the first and second fluids.

摘要: Server discovery, spawning collector threads to collect information from servers, and reporting such information, is disclosed. A method of one embodiment determines a number of servers communicatively coupled to a network. For each server, a collector thread is spawned to collect information regarding the server by sending requests to the server and receiving responses from the server. The collector threads can be spawned by and run on a computing device other than the number of servers, such that no computer-executable code is installed on the servers for collecting the information. Upon completion of the collector thread for each server, the information regarding the server as collected is stored to a database by one or more writer threads. The information may include dynamic load-oriented and function-oriented information regarding the servers, as well as static configuration information, from which server utilization-oriented statistics may be distilled to identify candidate servers for server consolidation.
