If a switching operation of the switching element takes place within a predetermined time interval after the triggering of the automatic braking operation, the automatic braking operation is not automatically ended. The system monitors whether another switching operation takes place within the time interval. The other switching operation is the reverse of the first switching operation. If another switching operation takes place during the time interval, a second relative motion between the push rod and the component which can be moved within a defined motional play has taken place in this time period. Since the brake pedal is continuing to be actuated, the automatic braking operation is not then ended.

A braking pressure control device for a hydraulic two-circuit brake system with a pneumatic braking force amplifier and an antilock brake system (ABS) that operates on the feedback principle, in which a switching valve is provided for each brake circuit. Each switching valve is switchable from a position connecting the brake circuit with a pressure outlet of the braking device into a position that shuts off this pressure outlet from the brake circuit. The control device has a precharging control valve that is switchable from a position that shuts off this pressure outlet from the low-pressure inlet of the feedback pump into a position that connects the pressure outlet with the feedback pump, as well as an electronic control unit that processes the sensor signals that contain at least the information on the type of actuation of the brake pedal to generate the signals required for automatic full brake application for controlling the switching valves, the precharging control valves, the feedback pumps, the inlet and outlet valves of the ABS, as well as a control valve by which the drive chamber of the braking force amplifier can be vented.

The relative movement between the pressure rod of the brake system and a component which can be moved with respect thereto within a defined movement play is detected by two control switches, namely a make contact and a break contact which are actuated via a common switching cam. A switching process of the control switches takes place whenever the brake pedal is moved in the direction of its rest position. If a switching process which corresponds to this relative movement takes place during an automatic braking process, the braking process is terminated.

A method and apparatus for carrying out an automatic braking procedure to further reduce the braking distance required for a braking operation. The brake pressure produced during the performance of the automatic braking procedure is increased at each axle until the ABS detects the reaching of the locking limit of at least one wheel of the respective axle. A further reduction in the braking distance is thus achieved by not only increasing the brake pressure to such an extent that one wheel of the vehicle reaches the locking limit but by increasing the brake pressure of the individual axles until at least one wheel of the respective axle reaches the locking limit. The maximum force transmission between the wheel and the roadway is thus obtained at each axle.

In a brake pressure setting device suitable for both an antilocking control system and a drive slip control system, a pressure modulator unit designed as a stepped cylinder is provided with a modulation chamber which can be connected to the main brake pipe of the brake circuit of the driven vehicle wheels and a control pressure space separated from the modulation chamber by the modulator piston. The control pressure space can be connected to a pressure outlet of an auxiliary pressure source or alternatively to its non-pressurized sump tank. The modulator piston is urged by a return spring into a position corresponding to maximum volume of the modulation chamber. Connecting the control pressure space to the pressure outlet of auxiliary pressure source moves the piston into an end position corresponding to a minimum volume of the modulation chamber. Controllable piston displacements can, with the interaction of the brake pressure control valves of the antilocking system, control brake pressure reduction and brake pressure build-up phases of antilocking and drive slip control in any given order. The modulator piston is continuously held in an intermediate position, from which the control can take place in the particular control direction necessary. A position indicator is provided for monitoring the initial position of the modulator piston. In addition, a mechanically controlled valve is provided which, after the modulator piston has executed a small fraction of its stroke in the direction which reduces the volume of the modulation chamber, moves into its functional position shutting off the modulation chamber from the outlet pressure space of the brake unit.
