An EL element includes a light-transmitting substrate, a light-transmitting electrode layer over a first surface of the substrate, a luminescent layer over the light-transmitting electrode layer, a back electrode layer over the luminescent layer, and a waterproof insulating layer covering the light-transmitting electrode layer, the luminescent layer, and the back electrode layer. The EL element and a lighting unit have excellent resistance against water. The light-transmitting electrode layer, the luminescent layer, and the back electrode layer end before an outer periphery of the substrate as well as before an end face of the substrate at each hole or notch in the substrate. This arrangement provides the EL element and the lighting unit with the excellent resistance against water.

A slide switch is fabricated by having a coiled spring, which has coil-end seating portions at both ends totaling ¾ to 1 turn, contained in a case or an operating member such that the operating member is biased by the spring. By virtue of such a configuration, the spring is prevented from bulging out at its center portion or coming off the containing portion. Thus, a slide switch which can be fabricated easily while also saving manpower can be provided.

A helical coil and a top-helical type antenna using the same, wherein the helical coil has a plurality of either substantially U-shaped or nearly V-shaped branch portions made of a thin metallic sheet material. The branch portions are connected continuously in a manner to place their open ends alternately inversely, and the branch portions alternatively curve toward an obverse side and a reverse side of the metallic sheet to form each turn of the coil. A method for producing the helical coil includes continuously die cutting a member on a belt-shaped strip of electrically conductive metallic sheet, and alternately placing a plurality of either substantially U-shaped or substantially V-shaped branch portions with their open ends inversely. These substantially U or V-shaped branch portions are then connected with each other in the shape of a letter, with connection to the metallic sheet being held only by linkage portions at opposite sides. The helical coil is formed by alternately curving the branch portions of each of the members in a shape of substantially circular arc toward an obverse side and a reverse side of the metallic sheet. A bobbin is formed connecting each turn of the helical coil by either insert-injection molding or outsert-injection molding of electrically nonconductive material on the individual helical coil formed on metallic sheet and subsequently the linkage portions are sheared off of the metallic sheet.

A method of voice recognition with a boundary binding type in consideration of a kind of a voice boundary estimates a probability where a boundary corresponds to every kind basis of the voice boundary. For a group of parameters within a window of a predetermined time width, the method is to calculate a group of common probability densities independent from the kind of the voice boundary, to multiply the result by first polynomial coefficient and to calculate a first probability where the voice boundary exists in a center of a window, to further multiply the result by a second polynomial coefficient and to calculate a second probability where the voice boundary does not exist in center of a window. A boundary likelihood dependent on a kind of voice boundary is obtained from the first and second probability densities. The voice recognition device compares with a threshold value depending on the kind of phonemic boundary when the time for producing the boundary of the phonemic model series is limited within a region of the phonemic boundary or the neighborhood of the phonemic boundary which is estimated in accordance with a boundary estimating method for the voice corresponding to the kind of phonemic boundary.

There is provided a cycloolefin polymer composition comprising 8 to 40% by weight of a cycloolefin polymer [A] and 92 to 60% by weight of a cycloolefin polymer [B], both having specific properties, wherein a difference .DELTA.n.sub.D =.vertline.n.sub.D (A)-n.sub.D (B).vertline. between the refractive index n.sub.D (A) of the polymer [A] and the refractive index n.sub.D (B) of the polymer [B] is not more than 0.015. This composition is excellent in impact resistance, transparency and heat resistance, and has a good balance of these properties. There is also provided a cycloolefin copolymer composition comprising 8 to 40% by weight of a cycloolefin elastomer component [Aa] of an .alpha.-olefin, a specific cycloolefin and a non-conjugated diene which contains a polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond; and 92 to 60% by weight of a cycloolefin copolymer component [Ba] which is obtained by copolymerizing an .alpha.-olefin and a specific cycloolefin in the presence of the elastomer component [Aa]; wherein a difference .DELTA.n.sub.D =.vertline.n.sub.D (A)-n.sub.D (B).vertline. between the refractive index n.sub.D (Aa) of the component [Aa] and the refractive index n.sub.D (Ba) of the component [Ba] is not more than 0.015. This composition has excellent properties inherent in a cycloolefin random copolymer and is improved especially in impact resistance without tranding off its transparency. There is also provided a cycloolefin copolymer composition comprising 8 to 40% by weight of a cycloolefin elastomer component [A.alpha.] of an .alpha.-olefin and a specific cycloolefin which substantially contains no polymerizable carbon-carbon double bond; and 92 to 60% by weight of a cycloolefin copolymer component [B.alpha.] which is obtained by copolymerizing an .alpha.-olefin and a specific cycloolefin in the presence of the elastomer component [A.alpha.]; wherein a difference .DELTA.n.sub.D =.vertline.n.sub.D (A)-n.sub.D (B).vertline. between the refractive index n.sub.D (A.alpha.) of the component [A.alpha.] and the refractive index n.sub.D (B.alpha.) of the component [B.alpha.] is not more than 0.015. This composition has also excellent properties inherent in a cycloolefin random copolymer and is improved particularly in impact resistance without trading off its transparency.

A mass flowmeter outputs an output value indicative of the flow rate of a gaseous mixture containing evaporative fuel and being purged into the intake system of an internal combustion engine. A calculated value of the flow rate of the mixture is obtained based on a plurality of operating parameters of the engine. The actual flow rate of the mixture and/or the actual flow rate of the evaporative fuel are/is calculated based on the output value from the mass flowmeter and the calculated value based on the engine operating parameters. The concentration of the evaporative fuel is calculated from the calculated actual flow rates of the evaporative fuel and the mixture. The calculated actual flow rate is compared with a desired flow rate value, and a purge control valve is controlled based on results of the comparison. A basic amount of fuel supplied to the engine is corrected based on the calculated actual flow rate of the evaporative fuel.
