Abstract:
Disclosed is a closure catheter, for closing a tissue opening such as an atrial septal defect, patent foreman ovale, or the left atrial appendage of the heart. The closure catheter carries a plurality of tissue anchors, which may be deployed into tissue surrounding the opening, and used to draw the opening closed. Methods are also disclosed.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a system adapted to position an ablation catheter at a location where a pulmonary vein extends from an atrium. The system includes a deflection device and a sheath and optionally uses a guidewire. An ablation catheter is disclosed for use with the positioning system, wherein the deflection device and the sheath cooperate so as to facilitate positioning of the catheter at the location.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an anastomosis catheter, for achieving a tissue to tissue or synthetic graft to tissue attachment. The catheter includes a plurality of deployable tissue anchors, which may be laterally deployed into surrounding tissue. The anchors may be used to achieve end to end or end to side anastomoses. Methods are also disclosed.
Abstract:
This is a method and an apparatus for the introduction of therapeutic compounds into tissue, particularly cardiac tissue. The apparatus includes a catheter having an elongated flexible body and a tissue infusion apparatus including a hollow infusion needle configured to secure the needle into the tissue when the needle is at least partially inserted into the tissue to help prevent inadvertent removal of the needle from the tissue. This permits the selected therapeutic compound to be delivered to a specific site. The catheter may also include a visualization assembly including a transducer at the distal end of the body.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an access catheter for identifying and providing access through a tissue structure such as the fossa ovalis on the intraatrial septum. The access catheter comprises an elongate flexible tubular body having a proximal and a distal end, and a retractable piercing structure such as a needle carried by the distal end. A detector such as a red, green, and blue light detector is associated with the access catheter, such that placement of the distal end of the catheter against the fossa ovalis can be detected. The piercing structure is thereafter advanceable to provide access to the left atrium through the fossa ovalis.
Abstract:
A tissue ablation catheter for forming a lesion along a substantially circumferential region of tissue is described. The catheter includes one or more sensors for monitoring the temperature of the tissue being ablated. The temperature sensors are mounted on the interior or exterior of an expandable member that is affixed to a shaft of the catheter.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a tissue ablation device assembly which is adapted to form a conduction block along a length of tissue between two predetermined locations along the left atrial wall. The assembly comprises an ablation element on an elongated ablation member that is coupled to each of two delivery members, wherein the delivery members are adapted to controllably position and secure the ablation element along the length of tissue between the predetermined locations. A linear lesion in the tissue between the predetermined locations is then formed by actuation of the ablation element. The invention further provides that the ablation member may slideably engage one or two delivery members such that an adjustable length of the ablation element along the ablation member may be extended externally from the engaged delivery member and along a length of tissue.
Abstract:
This invention is a method for treating a patient diagnosed with atrial arrhythmia by forming a circumferential conduction block along a circumferential path of tissue in a pulmonary vein wall that circumscribes the pulmonary vein lumen and transects the electrical conductivity of the pulmonary vein such that conduction is blocked along the longitudinal axis of the vein wall and into the left atrial wall. The method is performed to treat a patient with a focal arrythmogenic origin along the pulmonary vein wall by either ablating the focal origin or by isolating the focal origin from the atrial wall with the circumferential conduction block. The circumferential conduction block is also formed in a pulmonary vein in order to bridge the adjacent ends of two linear lesions, wherein each linear lesion is formed to extend between the pulmonary vein and another adjacent pulmonary vein in a less-invasive “maze”-type procedure. A circumferential ablation element in a circumferential ablation device assembly is used in a percutaneous translumenal catheter technique in order to form the circumferential conduction block in the pulmonary vein wall.

Disclosed is a closure catheter, for patching a tissue opening such as an atrial septal defect, patent foreman ovale, or the left atrial appendage of the heart. The closure catheter carries a deployable patch and a plurality of tissue anchors, which may be deployed to secure the patch to surrounding tissue. Methods are also disclosed.
