Thereafter, a finalization command is received to preserve the data-recording status of the recording medium. Encrypted and unencrypted audio data corresponding to an audio program to be reproduced, such as a musical selection, are recorded in different areas of a recording medium. The encrypted audio data allows a reproduction of the audio program with a sound quality far better than a reproduction of the audio program using the audio data which is not encrypted. The audio data is encrypted and recorded to prevent illegal copying of the higher quality sound data. Accordingly, audio data may be reproduced using the unencrypted audio data in a reproducing apparatus complying with existing specifications. Higher quality audio may be reproduced from the encrypted audio data using the present invention.

The radio receiver has a match filter receptive of rectified samples of digitized intermediate-frequency signal and responsive to the amplitude of the intermediate-frequency carrier being modulated in accordance with the field synchronization code group to generate a pulsed response to the beginning of each data field. This pulsed response is used to determine when data segment synchronization information should occur, so its detection is more certain to be accurate and data segment synchronization is more rapidly determined. Symbol synchronization is rapidly inferred from the field synchronization and data segment synchronization, so that the samples in each data line can be counted. The complex carrier frequencies of the final intermediate frequency signals are generated in response to the samples per data line count, for implementing synchronous detection to baseband. The adjustment of the carrier frequency of the final intermediate frequency signal to be a prescribed multiple of symbol rate is done in response to an automatic-frequency-and-phase-control signal developed from the synchronous detection results.

The second under signal is generated in such way that line-comb filtering can be used during playback to separate color-under signal and second under signal each from the composite signal despite their frequency spectra being at least partially overlapping in the composite signal.

Apparatus is disclosed for processing video information which is reproduced from a magnetic recording medium in a video cassette recorder. The luminance portion of the video signal, which is "folded" about a sampling frequency carrier before recording on magnetic tape, is unfolded after being read from the magnetic tape to restore the bandwidth of the signal, and is applied in parallel through horizontal and vertical comb filters. The combined output of the horizontal comb filter and the vertical comb filter may include incompletely cancelled horizontal and vertical components of the folding frequency and sidebands due to the effects of picture contents. An edge detector receptive to the unfolded video signal responds to an encountered brightness edge, and generates a signal which varies the proportions of the video outputs of the horizontal and vertical comb filters in the combined output.
