Abstract: A lubricating-oil consists of a mineral oil containing an oil-soluble oxidation inhibitor compound with an aromatic nucleus which has directly attached thereto both an inhibitor group, and a stabilizer group comprising an oxygen, sulphur, selenium or tellurium atom attached to the nucleus in ether form, to which has been added a metallo-organic compound of bismuth, tin, or antimony soluble in the oil. The oxidation inhibitor and metallo-organic compound may each comprise ,01 to 1 per cent by weight of the oil, the amount of oxidation inhibitor being preferably greater than that of the metallo-organic compound. Oxidation inhibitors specified are tertiarybutyl-4-tertiarybutyl-6 hydroxyphenyl thioether, tertiaryamyl - 4 tertiaryamyl - 6 hydroxyphenyl disulphide, di-(4 tertiarybutyl-6 hydroxyphenyl) thioether and 4-butoxy-2-amino naphthalene. Suitable metallo-organic compounds are triphenyl bismuth, triphenyl tin iodide, trimethyl triphenyl distannane, tetra propyl tin, tetra isobutyl tin and triphenyl stibene. Examples are given of mineral lubricating-oils mixed with di-(4 tertiarybutyl-6 hydroxyphenyl) thio ether and either triphenyl bismuth or triphenyl tin iodide. Specifications 398,222, 433,257, and 445,813 are referred to. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the oxidation inhibitors comprise high boiling organic compounds soluble in mineral oils and having the formula R-Xn-R1, where R and R1 are aliphatic, cyclic, or mixed groups, or are or contain an inorganic group, X is a negative element of Group VI of the periodic table, and n is an integer, specified examples of such compounds being diamyltrisulphide, amyl alphaxanthogenacetic ethyl ester, and compounds of the type of This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
