The refrigerator lubricating oil of the present invention contains: a base oil containing, as a major component, a polyol ester (A) of a fatty acid (a1) that is a fatty acid having a number of carbon atoms of from 3 to 18 and a polyol (a2) that is selected from neopentyl glycol, trimethylolethane, trimethylolpropane, trimethylolbutane, pentaerythritol, and dipentaerythritol; and a disulfide and/or trisulfide compound (B), and the disulfide and/or trisulfide compound (B) is blended in an amount of from 30 to 10,000 ppm by mass in terms of sulfur equivalent based on the total amount of the refrigerator lubricating oil.

The invention involves a composition for forming a combined conversion and lubricating coating on a metal substrate with which the composition is brought into contact. The composition comprises (a) an oxyethylated aliphatic alcohol whose aliphatic hydrocarbon moiety contains 18 or more carbon atoms and (b) dissolved phosphate anions. Preferably the composition also comprises inorganic boron, an alkali metal salt of a fatty acid, and an accelerator for phosphate coating.

The semi-packages contain: (A) a dispersant, a zinc salt, and a detergent and (B) an organo molybdenum compound. The packages are formed individually prior to mixing.

Lubricant (including grease), hydraulic fluid, or fuel compositions comprise the following ingredients: (a) an oil, (b) a nitrogen-containing polymeric detergent, (c) a compound of the general formula where a + b = 3, a is 0, 1 or 2, b is 1, 2 or 3, R is alkyl, R1 is H or alkyl, X is O or S, and Q is aryl, and (d) a compound of the general formula where n is 0, 1 or 2, R11 is alkyl, Y is -OH or R1 is as above, Z is O, S or a methylene group, and Q is aryl. Typical ingredients are: (a) natural hydrocarbon oils, polyolefines, di-(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, mono- and di-pentaerythritol esters of mixed C3-8 fatty acids, or a polyalkyl silicone; (b) N-dimethyl-aminopropyl polybutenyl succinimide, the tetraethylene pentamine di-imide of mono-(polypropylene) succinic acid, and copolymers of vinyl pyridines, vinyl pyrrolidones and amino-alkyl acrylates with copolymerizable monomers, usually alkyl acrylates and methacrylates; (c) bis-(nonylphenyl) phosphoramide, and N-methyl bis-(octylphenyl) thionophosphoramide; and (d) bis - (N,N - dimethylaminophenyl) methane, 1,1 - bis - (3,5 - diisopropyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) methane, and bis-(N,N-dioctyl-aminophenyl) ether and thioether. A composition containing one or more sulfur-containing compounds represented by the formula (R1)a(X)(R2)b wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and are the residue of an olefin (e.g., aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic olefin) having from 4 to 40 carbon atoms, X is the residue of a thiol or polythiol, a is a value from 1 to 6, and b is a value from 0 to 6. The composition has a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. (Kv100) from 2 to 300 cst, a kinematic viscosity at 40° C. (Kv40) from 5 to 4000 cst, a viscosity index (VI) from −100 to 300, and a Noack volatility of no greater than 90 percent. A process for producing the composition, a lubricating oil base stock and lubricating oil containing the composition, and a method for improving one or more of solubility and dispersancy of polar additives in a lubricating oil containing the composition.

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity and a sulfurized aromatic amine compound, especially sulfur coupled aniline. The invention further relates to methods of lubricating an internal combustion engine by supplying the described lubricating composition to the internal combustion engine. The invention further relates to the use of the sulfurized aromatic amine compound as a TBN booster and an antioxidant.

The present invention relates to methods for production of arylsulfides wherein an aromatic compound is reacted with elemental sulfur in the presence of solid acid catalyst. The solid acid catalyst can be a zeolite. The methods are useful for producing alkylated diphenylsulfides from aromatic compounds and elemental sulfur.

The invention relates to bisphenyl thiocompounds of formula (I), wherein X1 to X5 independently represent H, Cl, F, OH, SH, R, —OR and —SR, wherein R is an organic radical with 1 to 18 C atoms, which can be an alkyl or alkenyl radical that can also contain —O—, —S— instead of a one to four non-adjacent CH2 groups and that can be substituted once or multiple times by —OH, —SH or halogen, an unsubstituted phenyl, cyclohexyl or cyclohexylmethyl radical or substituted by one or up to three alkyl groups with a total of 1 to 9 C atoms in which a CH2 group may be replaced by —O—, provided that at least 3 of the radicals X1 to X5 are; Y1 to Y5 independently have the meaning cited for X1 to X5 and Z represents an &agr;, &ohgr;-alkylene group with 2 to 18 C atoms in which one to three CH2 groups may be substituted by —O— or —S— and 1,4-cyclohexandimethyl group or a simple bond. The invention also relates to the use of said compounds as lubricants.
