Embodiments disclosed herein generally relate to magnetic recording systems having a spindle motor and, more particularly, to an optimized lubricant for bearings within the spindle motor. A lubricant used in a fluid dynamic bearing motor has an antioxidant additive and a charge control agent dissolved in a diester base oil. The charge control agent is chemically attached to the same diacid reactant used in the diester lubricant base oil, and is prepared through an esterification reaction. The charge control agent is then dissolved in the lubricant base oil. The charge control agent is soluble in the lubricant, and is resistant to free radical oxidation. The charge control agent effectively controls the charge of the lubricant by creating electron donor/acceptor sites in the lubricant, facilitating an independent electronic pathway through the lubricant.

The present invention provides a rolling bearing which is excellent in high-temperatures and high-speed durability and quietness, is capable of effectively preventing hydrogen brittleness-caused peeling from occurring on a rolling surface thereof, and has a low environmental load. A rolling bearing (1) is constructed of an inner ring (2) having a rolling surface on its peripheral surface, an outer ring (3) having a rolling surface on its inner peripheral surface, a plurality of rolling elements (4) disposed between both rolling surfaces, and a cage (5) retaining the rolling elements (4). The inner ring (2), the outer ring (3), the rolling elements (4) or the cage (5) is a metal-made bearing member. Film-coating treatment is conducted on a sliding surface or a rolling surface of at least one of these metal-made bearing members with the plant-derived polyvalent alcohol compounds such as curcumin, quercetin, chlorogenic acid or the like.

The present invention provides a viscosity index improving lubricant additive which comprises an olefinic oligomer of about 2,000 to about 20,000 number average molecular weight having a viscosity of 75 to about 3,000 cSt at 100° C. and a hydrocarbyl aromatic which contains at least about 5% of its weight from aromatic moieties having a viscosity of about 3 to about 50 cSt at 100° C. where the weight ratio of hydrocarbyl aromatic component to olefin oligomer is from about 1:2 to about 50:1. In another aspect, the invention provides for a lubricating oil composition comprising a base oil and the instant viscosity index improving additive.

It is disclosed that aromatic compounds can be alkylated with mono-olefinic HVI-PAO dimer in contact with an acidic catalyst to produce novel alkylated aromatic compositions. It has been found that the novel HVI-PAO dimer alkylated aromatic compositions exhibit an extraordinary combination of properties relating to low viscosity with high viscosity index and low pour point which renders them very useful as lubricant basestock. Further, it has been found that the novel alkylaromatic compositions of the present invention show improved oxidative stability. Depending upon the substituent groups on the aromatic nucleus, useful lubricant additives can be prepared for improved antiwear, antioxidant and other properties. HVI-PAO dimer is prepared as a product or by-product from 1-alkene oligomerization using reduced chromium oxide on solid support.

A lubricating composition has been found for chain and gear drive mechanisms. The composition comprises a polyalphaolefin base oil, an ester oil solubilizer and 2 to 4 wt % of a polybutene tackifier. The composition replaces a mineral oil formulation and demonstrates persistent lubricity and substantially reduced smoking in chain and drive gear assemblies operated at high temperatures.
