Furthermore the protective insert includes two attachment mechanisms adjacent to the connective segment with each of the two attachment mechanisms adapted to removably attach one of the two optical fibers to the connective segment. Such a protective insert may be implemented inside a network interface device (NID) or with a wall-plate to be installed inside customer premises in a manner that allows a customer to easily interconnect a home network cable to an optical network terminal.

At least one pool of addresses is issued to the new routing element, permitting the new routing element to dynamically add yet another new routing element to the network of routing elements.

A method and system for generating real-time announcements in a digital packet-switched telecommunications network includes an announcement server for sensing a predetermined trigger event and generating a predetermined announcement for insertion into a data stream. A packet-based network then transmits the packetized announcement along with the current data stream for receipt by the destination. The announcement is then processed by the appropriate processing device, such as a Base Station Controller or a wireless handset, immediately upon receipt of the packetized announcement so that it can be generated in real-time.

A method and system is provided for selectively directing calls to wireless units in an integrated wireline and wireless communication system as part of a wireless extension service. When a call is forwarded by a wireline switch, the receiving wireless access manager determines whether the intended wireless subscriber unit is being serviced by a different access manager. If so, the call is automatically transferred using a high speed ATM inter-access manager communication line. Efficiency is therefore increased because the originating wireline switch does not need to set up an interoffice trunk line to accomplish the necessary call routing.

The cradle further terminates a secondary telecommunications line, different from the primary telecommunications line, having at least one secondary telephone connected thereto. Still further, the cradle includes a spring-loaded switch integrally formed therein, wherein when the hand-held transceiver is in the cradle, the switch is biased to break contact between the primary telecommunications line and the secondary telecommunications line. When the hand-held transceiver is removed from the cradle, the switch is biased to connect the primary telecommunications line with the secondary telecommunications line so as to permit users of the primary telecommunications line to continue to receive and place calls when the hand-held transceiver is removed from the cradle.

A service logic, such as a Service Control Point (SCP), assigns the wireline interfaces to the telecommunications subscribers on a call-by-call basis based on the features subscribed to by the subscriber. The processor is further operative to reprovision the wireline interfaces based on the number of subscribers assigned to the wireline interfaces.
