摘要: A balloon catheter includes an inflation shaft and an elongated guidewire shaft. A relatively short, distal portion of the guidewire shaft is attached to, or enveloped within, a distal portion of the inflation shaft. A proximal portion of the guidewire shaft is detached from and independent of a proximal portion of the inflation shaft. The detached portion of the guidewire shaft contains perforations at pre-determined points along its length that define removable segments thereof. The removable segments remain attached to the guidewire shaft under normal conditions, but may be torn away from the guidewire shaft to provide access to a guidewire within a guidewire lumen thereof.

摘要: A balloon catheter includes a one-piece shaft and a guidewire track for use of a guidewire that runs along an outer surface of the one-piece shaft adjacent to a longitudinal central axis of the one-piece shaft. The one-piece shaft has an inflation lumen formed therein. The one-piece shaft is formed to include a substantially C-shaped cross section, which has two endpoints and forms the guidewire track. The dimensions of the wall thicknesses between the inflation lumen and the guidewire track may be varied to help maintain the guidewire track and the gap between the endpoints of the C-shaped cross section such that a guidewire is maintained on the guidewire track and does not traverse the gap. In addition, a reinforcement may be included in the single lumen shaft to maintain the integrity of the guidewire track.

摘要: A prosthesis for implantation in a blood vessel includes struts with a cross-section having a flat base with angled edges on the inner surface and chamfered edges on the outer or exterior surface. The base angled edge is substantially a right angle, while the outer or exterior surface has edges that are chamfered with either round or angled chamfers. The chamfers could be manufactured by either machining the chamfer into the stock material, or by tumbling the stent in a tumbler to abrasively wear the edges to form a chamfer.

摘要: An x-ray emitting system and method for administering a predetermined x-ray dose rate are provided. The system includes an x-ray emitter, a controller operably connected to the x-ray emitter, a current sensor operably connected to the controller, and a voltage sensor operably connected to the controller. The controller determines an actual dose rate based on a received current sensor signal and a received voltage sensor signal and adjusts a supplied voltage to allow the actual dose rate to match a predetermined dose rate. The method of operating a device for emitting x-rays includes: applying a voltage from a voltage source to the device, measuring current and voltage within the device, determining an actual dose rate based on the measured current and voltage, comparing a desired dose rate to the actual dose rate, adjusting the applied voltage, and matching the actual dose rate to the desired dose rate.

摘要: A cathode for a miniature X-ray device includes an insulating shell, a cathode and an anode. The cathode includes a focusing cup formed into an end. The focusing cup can include a thin metal layer that conforms to an inner surface of the cathode. An emitting material having a low work function, such as diamond, is deposited directly onto the internal surface of the focusing cup. The anode has a flat receiving surface for collecting electrons emitted from the anode. An interior coating is applied as a circumferential belt on the interior surface of the insulating shell. The interior coating, formed of a negative secondary emission yield material, extends lengthwise in the region of the cathode to an anode gap, covering the region of the insulating shell most likely to be subject to stray electrons emitted from the cathode.

摘要: A encapsulated stent device for implantation within the vascular system includes a balloon of a balloon catheter formed around and adhered to a wire-like stent so that the outer surface of the device is more regular for delivery through the vascular system without an exterior sheath. The encapsulation securely anchors the stent to the balloon and maintains a low profile for negotiation of tortuous and narrowed vessels. Encapsulation requires placement of the stent over the balloon, placement of a sheath over the stent on the balloon, heating and preferably pressurization of the balloon to cause it to expand around the stent within the sheath, and cooling while preferably maintaining pressure to cause the balloon to adhere to the stent and to set the shape of the expanded balloon. Retainers may be placed at the distal and/or proximal ends of the stent during the encapsulation process, or the balloon material may expand to form retainers. The balloon defines at least three folded wings for symmetrical expansion of the stent, and one or more connected or non-connected stents may be encapsulated depending upon the area to be treated.

摘要: A method and apparatus for treating stenoses at bifurcated regions of body lumens is disclosed. A balloon catheter system is disclosed comprising two balloon catheters, or a balloon catheter having a bifurcated distal end, with a linking guide wire lumen at the distal end of one balloon catheter, or one branch of the bifurcated catheter, for linking the two balloons or branches such that the device can be tracked to a treatment site. Once at the treatment site, the balloon catheters or branches of the bifurcated distal end can be unlinked and separately positioned within the branches of the bifurcated body lumen. The apparatus can also serve as a delivery system for multiple prostheses or a bifurcated endoluminal prosthesis.

摘要: A rapidly exchangeable catheter for use in the coronary arteries includes an elongate relatively stiff proximal segment that defines an inflation lumen, an intermediate, shorter segment formed from a more flexible plastic material and having two lumens, and a third, single lumen distal segment. A balloon or other instrumentality adapted to operate in a coronary artery is mounted to the distal region of the catheter. The intermediate and distal segments include a guidewire lumen by which the catheter may be advanced along a guidewire. The proximal segment may include an inflation lumen when the operating instrumentality at the distal end of the catheter is a balloon. The intermediate and distal segments of the catheter are of a length of between about 35 to 45 cm such that when the catheter is advanced into the most remote distal portions of the coronary anatomy, the flexible plastic intermediate and distal segments will extend over the aortic arch of the patient thereby containing the guidewire over the aortic arch and maintaining the juncture of the relatively stiff proximal segment and the more flexible intermediate segment proximally of the aortic arch. The relatively stiff proximal section thus extends generally along a straight line from the femoral artery into the descending aorta but not so far as into the aortic arch. Buckling of the catheter is avoided so that the catheter is more easily manipulated.
