摘要: A mold for retaining a seedling during handling and transportation, whereby the mold is formed of turf, water, nutrients and a synthetic molding material. The dried form retaining mold form receives a seedling and then is packaged as needed for further handling prior to being planted and watered. The seedling then grows directly in the mold. The invention also includes the process and device for manufacturing such molds.

摘要: An automated system for growing plant material includes an first length of membrane material having a plurality of open growing chambers and a second length of membrane material having a plurality of growing chambers filled with the plant material. A media preparation unit mixes measured amounts of individual stock solutions for dispensing media into the open growing chambers by a fill unit. A fill check scanner unit determines that a sufficient amount of media has been dispensed within each growing chamber. A sterilization unit sterilizes the media filled open growing chambers which then pass to a cooling and storage unit for cooling and storing the media-filled open growing chambers until ready for planting with plant material. The second length of plant-filled growing chambers are housed in a plant culture room where the plant material is permitted to grow. A growth detection scanner determines the extent of growth of the plant material. Upon the plant material reaching a predetermined growth, the plant-filled growing chambers pass to a surface sterilization unit for surface sterilizing the plant-filled growing chambers. A cutting opens the growing chambers and the plant material is removed. The removed plant material is passed through a cutting unit where the plant material is cut into pieces. Each piece of plant material is then planted into a media-filled open growing chamber from the cooling and storing unit. A heat sealer closes the open end of the newly plant-filled growing chambers. The newly plant-filled growing chambers are then transported back to the culture room. A tractor feed apparatus transports the lengths of growing chambers throughout the automated system and a control system synchronizes and controls the operation of each of the units and tractor feed apparatus.

摘要: The apparatus comprises a delumper-sifter and a mixer used to prepare a mixture of peat and water which is placed in storage; the mixture is then passed to a forming device, is extruded in the form of continuous cylinder and is covered with a sheet of degradable paper; the covered product is cut up by means of a rotating spiral cutter, the rotational speed of which is synchronized with the speed at which the mixture emerges from the forming device, thus making it possible to obtain cylindrical extrusions of a predetermined length; the cut extrusions pass to a conveyor-distributor which arranges them in rows and then allows them to fall, in a vertical position, onto a supporting conveyor above which a drum, equipped with cylindrical protuberances, produces in the extrusions cavities in which seeds are subsequently placed and covered with sand; the final operation carried out by the apparatus is to group the seedling tubes thus produced and to wrap them in packages.

摘要: Cut sod sections are conveyed through a first scoring and trimming apparatus which produces plural parallel cuts or scores through the sod in one coordinate direction while trimming the ends of each section to a uniform length. The cuts or scores are not made entirely through the root network. The sod sections are turned ninety degrees and placed in pairs on trays employed in subsequent packaging and are conveyed through a second scoring apparatus which produces plural parallel scores in the sod sections in a second coordinate direction. The first and second scorings are made in the soil side of the sod while it is conveyed grass side down.

摘要: Plants are grown in expanded peat moss units which have been produced by intermixing an aqueous bituminous emulsion with peat moss in critical proportions of peat moss to bitumen, drying the mixture, and compressing portions thereof uni-directionally to form rigid bodies. The compressed bodies have a thickness which is a small fraction of their original thickness. These bodies are expanded by contact with water to form soft cakes, which retain their shape without the need for external constraint, while permitting normal plant and root growth therein. The expanded shape-retaining cakes have a thickness intermediate their original and compressed thicknesses.
