Abstract:
Devices and methods for locating apertures in a surgical nail inserted in a patient. The apertures in the surgical nail may be positionally calibrated relative to disclosed devices prior to insertion in a bone of the patient, with the calibration used to locate the apertures in the surgical nail after insertion in the bone of the patient.
Abstract:
A total ankle replacement system, novel surgical method for total ankle replacement, and novel surgical tools for performing the surgical method are described. The total ankle replacement system includes the calcaneus in fixation of a lower prosthesis body, thereby significantly increasing the amount of bone available for fixation of the lower prosthesis body and allowing the lower prosthesis body to be anchored with screws. The total ankle replacement system further includes a long tibial stem which can also be anchored into the tibia with, for example, screws, nails, anchors, or some other means of attachment. The novel surgical arthroscopic method allows introduction of ankle prostheses into the ankle joint through an exposure in the tibial tubercle. Various novel surgical instruments, such as a telescoping articulating reamer and a talo-calcaneal jig, which facilitate the novel surgical method, are also described.
Abstract:
A flexible bone screw for insertion into the intramedullary cavity of a fractured bone facilitates enduring fixation of the fracture. The flexible bone screw includes a substantially smooth shaft and a threaded portion positioned at one end of the shaft, wherein the outer diameter of the threaded portion is greater than the shaft diameter and the length of the threaded portion is about 20% of the overall length of the flexible bone screw or less.
Abstract:
An anti-backout stylus comprising a stylus and a locking stylus holder. The locking stylus holder engages the stylus at a series of discrete positions during insertion of the stylus into the holder. The locking stylus holder prevents inadvertent backing out of the stylus by preventing the stylus from being withdrawn to a previous one of the discrete positions. The locking stylus holder can preferably be selectively disengaged from the stylus to allow for selective withdrawal of the stylus. Each engagement of one of the discrete positions by the locking stylus holder preferably indicates a femoral size. The discrete positions are preferably defined by detents formed on the stylus and a stop member on the locking stylus holder. The locking stylus holder can be provided on an anterior rough cut guide, with the anterior rough cut guide preferably mountable on an intramedullary rod.
Abstract:
A targeting device (1) for guiding a drill arrangement (11, 12) for forming an arc-shaped bore in an assembly of adjacent bones or bone fragments, comprises a support frame (2; 5; 7), a pivoting device (8) mounted to the support frame (2; 5; 7) and arranged to receive the drill arrangement (11; 12) and to allow a pivoting movement of the drill arrangement (11; 12) along an arc-shaped path having a predetermined radius of curvature rc around a pivot axis (9). The support frame (2; 5; 7) is provided with at least three fixation devices (3; 4; 6) each configured to fix one of the bones (14; 15; 16) or fragments of the bone assembly to define a fixed position in space of the bone assembly (14; 15; 16) with respect to the pivoting device (8) when the bone assembly is installed to the support frame (2; 5; 7).
Abstract:
A method for repairing a defect in an interosseous membrane located between a first bone and a second bone. The method includes: coupling a flexible member to the first bone and the second bone, the flexible member extending past a first area of the interosseous membrane between the first bone and the second bone; and orienting the flexible member such that the flexible member extends generally parallel to fibers of the first area of the interosseous membrane.
Abstract:
A system for fixing a fracture near a joint of a bone comprises (a) an intramedullary device including a longitudinal body and a head, the longitudinal body extending from a proximal end to a distal end, the head being attached to the proximal end of the longitudinal body; and (b) a plate implantable into a head portion of the bone to provide support to a joint zone, the plate engageable with the intramedullary device. The plate is substantially U-shaped and includes a midsection and a pair of arms extending from the midsection, the pair of arms forming a space therebetween, the space sized and shaped to accommodate the head of the intramedullary device.
Abstract:
Apparatus for treating a bone fracture, the apparatus comprising: an anchoring tube comprising a hollow elongated shaft adapted for disposition in a hole formed in a bone and having a distal end, a proximal end and a lumen extending therebetween, and a substantially planar plate mounted to the proximal end of the hollow elongated shaft and adapted for disposition against the outer surface of the bone; wherein the plate comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, and further wherein the bottom surface of the plate is convex, such that when the anchoring tube is disposed in a hole formed in a bone and is rotated about the longitudinal axis of the hollow elongated shaft, the convex bottom surface of the plate maintains supporting contact with the outer surface of the bone.
Abstract:
An intramedullary system for managing a fracture of a bone comprises a first rod for insertion into a medullary canal of the bone; and a second rod for insertion into the medullary canal of the bone. The intramedullary system may further include: a first hollow rod segment for receiving an end of the first rod near the first entry point; and a second hollow rod segment for receiving an end of the second rod near the second entry point, wherein the first hollow rod segment and the second hollow rod segment are tamped to force the first curved portion and the second curved portion of the first and second hollow rod segments inside of the bone, along with the first and second rods.
