Internal combustion engines that operate in an inverted orientation in which the piston is closer to the local gravitationally dominant terrestrial body's center of gravity at top dead center position than at bottom dead center position are disclosed. The engines may have non-circular, preferably rectangular, cross-section pistons and cylinders, and the pistons may include a skirt with a field of pockets that provide a ringless, non-lubricated, seal equivalent. The pistons also may have a domed piston head with depressions thereon to facilitate the movement of air/charge in the cylinder. The engines also may use multi-stage poppet valves in lieu of conventional poppet valves, and a split crankshaft. The engines may use the pumping motion of the engine piston to supercharge the cylinder with air/charge.

A second die segment has die core stubs positioned so as to extend between adjacent die core pieces when the segments are brought together. An engine block formed by the die segments has cylindrical bores formed by the cylindrical projections extending from the deck of the block and voids formed by the die core pieces also extending from the deck and disposed about the cylindrical bores. Pockets formed by the die core stubs extend into sides of the engine block between adjacent voids. The engine block is worked below the level of the deck to undercut each of the pockets, removing material between them and the voids to result in an interconnected water jacket extending about the cylindrical bores, while leaving the deck closed.

A method is provided for producing a ventilation bore in a thrust bearing of a crankcase of a reciprocating internal combustion engine by milling. The milling cutter is an angled-head milling cutter, which is introduced into the crankcase in the direction of a cylinder longitudinal axis and is moved in the direction of a crankcase longitudinal axis until the thrust bearing is perforated. Subsequently, the angled-head milling cutter is moved back in the direction of the crankcase longitudinal axis and removed from the crankcase by moving the angled-head milling cutter in the direction of the cylinder longitudinal axis. Internal stresses in the crankcase are avoided by the production of the ventilation bore, as a result of which the strength of the crankcase is increased.

A casing structure of an automotive internal combustion engine includes an upper/lower divided crankcase structure. A crankshaft and a first transmission shaft of a pair of transmission shafts parallel to the crankshaft of a transmission are axially supported by a dividing surface of the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase. The dividing surface of the crankcase is inclined so that a second transmission shaft axially supported by the upper crankcase above the first transmission shaft is below the crankshaft. A cylinder is formed on the upper crankcase so that a cylinder axial line is orthogonal to the dividing surface.
