摘要: A composite brake drum for use in a drum brake assembly includes a one-piece mounting flange and shell and a liner cast integrally in a shell portion thereof. The method for forming the composite brake drum of this invention includes the steps of: (a) providing a generally circular metal blank having an initial pilot hole inner diameter; (b) spin forming the metal blank to produce a one-piece brake drum component defining a center longitudinal axis and including a cylindrical shell having a squealer band which defines a squealer band outer diameter, a mounting flange extending radially inwardly from one end of the shell toward the center longitudinal axis, and an annular lip extending radially inwardly from an opposite end of the shell toward the center longitudinal axis, and wherein the shell, the flange, and the lip cooperate to define a cylindrical mold cavity; (c) subsequent to step (b), centrifugally casting a liner in situ within the mold cavity of the brake drum component to thereby produce the composite vehicle brake drum; and (d) subsequent to step (c), machining the initial pilot hole inner diameter to a final pilot hole inner diameter by locating off of the squealer band outer diameter.

摘要: A brake lining assembly for a wheel brake of a vehicle braking system includes a backing plate and a friction pad overlying the backing plate. An engagement panel is disposed between the backing plate and the friction pad for securing the friction pad to the backing plate. The engagement panel includes a plurality of engagement apertures to secure the friction material to the backing plate. The surface area of the panel is greater than the space defined by the engagement apertures. The panel thus forms a rigid frame for the friction pad, and provides structural support.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a bonded friction product, such as an automobile brake shoe, and apparatus therefor, includes forming a plastic inner lining element of uncured or green thermosetting resin binder containing friction modifiers and reinforcements and bonding the element to a shoe platform by way of an adhesive resin in a heat and pressure regime which cures the resin binder and adhesive. The need for a closed mold and/or venting stops is avoided by a stabilizing press (50) which includes a heated bed (53) between guide plates (56, 57) that has a recess (52) of less thickness than the lining element (16) to receive such lining element in its green state. The guide plates are spaced slightly further apart than the width of a shoe platform which is, having been preheated, brought down onto the lining element and pressed by a pneumatic ram (70), the loosely sliding shoe body (11) comprising a non-sealing closure member of the press. The previously heated surface (53) of the press bed and shoe platform (12) combine with the lightly ramped-up pressure to create setting-up of the surface resins and fix final dimensions; the ram osition is then clamped to permit internal pressure growth as curing proceeds and gases are vented without disrupting the sealed major surfaces.

The underlayer material may comprise not only a single layer but also a plurality of layers having different composition to enhance the effectiveness.

摘要: Modular clutch construction in which a clutch cover assembly, concentrically containing a pressure plate actuating a clutch disc assembly, is fixed to the flywheel of an engine as a modular unit. The construction improves the modular connection between the clutch cover peripheral wall and the flywheel; in particular through the use of pins to restrain the cover from whirling relative to the flywheel, and by a taking advantage of a method of starter ring-gear installation in which the gear is shrink-fitted over the flywheel with the clutch cover peripheral wall intervening, such that the circumferential end margin of the clutch cover is simultaneously clamped between the ring gear and the flywheel cylindrical surface. The clutch cover is thus secured onto the flywheel in an assembly stage of reduced steps, by comparison with methods employing bolts or other fasteners as the primary connecting means. The modular connection can further be by matching mortise and tenon forms, or by mutually engaging threads, in corresponding portions of the flywheel and the clutch cover.

摘要: A brake shoe, in which a friction lining is secured to a platform of a shoe body solely by a thermosetting adhesive resin cured at elevated temperature, has a friction material including fibrous reinforcement materials and an uncured thermosetting binder, roll formed to define a green lining element which is sandwiched with the adhesive between the platform and a bearing surface that applies small constraining pressure by way of the major faces but not minor faces. The resins of the adhesive and lining element are cured together in situ on, and into intimate conformity with, the platform. The constraining pressure is preferably long enough to overcome any tendency for the curing friction material to expand in thickness or fall in density due to evolution of gases therein, by easy escape of gases from the unconstrained minor faces permitting the small constraining pressure on the major surfaces. To effect an increase in density of the lining by way of a decrease in thickness with only small changes of the minor faces.
