Brake pad for braking systems, in particular for disc brakes, consisting of friction portion (10), tribologically active, and mechanical support portion (20) which is intended to cooperate with the actuating means of a braking system. At least friction portion (10) is made from a ceramic matrix material obtained with a method comprising the following operational steps: —preparing a mixture of at least one siliconic type ceramic precursor, of particles of hard materials suitable as abrasives, of particles of substances suitable as lubricants and particles of metal materials;—hot-pressing the mixture to obtain a preformed body;—submitting the preformed body to a process of pyrolysis in order to obtain ceramisation of the preceramic binder, thus obtaining the ceramic matrix material. The mixture comprises a catalyst suitable for favouring reticulation of said ceramic precursor during the hot-pressing step and the pyrolysis process is carried out a temperatures below 8000° C. The mechanical support portion (20) may be made in ceramic matrix material as one piece with the friction portion or it may consist of a support plate provided with lightening apertures.

The present invention provides an improved multi-mold apparatus for manufacturing friction members, with each mold composed of a set comprising a first (top) mold, a second (bottom) mold, and a frame mold. The apparatus is capable of correcting any misalignment in the mountings of the plurality of molds and accurately aligning the molds by movably supporting at least one of the first mold, the second mold and the third mold by first, second and frame bases, respectively, so that the base and molds are movable laterally, in a direction perpendicular to the direction of advance. Projections are formed on one of the first mold and either the frame mold or the back plate and bonding through-holes are formed on the remaining mold or the back plate, so that the projections engage the holes so as to align the first mold and the frame mold accurately.

The method for forming the composite brake drum of this invention includes the steps of: (a) providing a generally circular metal blank having an initial pilot hole inner diameter; (b) spin forming the metal blank to produce a one-piece brake drum component defining a center longitudinal axis and including a cylindrical shell having a squealer band which defines a squealer band outer diameter, a mounting flange extending radially inwardly from one end of the shell toward the center longitudinal axis, and an annular lip extending radially inwardly from an opposite end of the shell toward the center longitudinal axis, and wherein the shell, the flange, and the lip cooperate to define a cylindrical mold cavity; (c) subsequent to step (b), centrifugally casting a liner in situ within the mold cavity of the brake drum component to thereby produce the composite vehicle brake drum; and (d) subsequent to step (c), machining the initial pilot hole inner diameter to a final pilot hole inner diameter by locating off of the squealer band outer diameter.

The process comprises providing a flat sheet metal blank, admixing a curable synthetic resin binder to the powder mixture to provide a binder-containing mixture, applying the binder-containing mixture to the blank to form a coating thereon, partly setting the coating, subsequently shaping the blank with the coating to form the carrying ring, and curing the coating on the carrying ring to form the friction lining.
