Abstract:
A method of imparting superior fatigue performance to a vehicle wheel cast from a magnesium alloy by selective application of friction stir processing to regions of the casting known to be subject to high in-service stresses is described. The method may be particularly applicable to open wheel designs in which a plurality of spokes is used to connect the hub and rim portions of the wheel.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of producing a sheet metal pulley for a V belt without cutting which may impair the environment of a factory. A sheet metal pulley for a V belt which is obtained by the production method of the present invention has plural valley portions around which V belts are to be wound. In the production method, an annular first valley portion which is opened in a V-like shape is formed by slitting a root portion of a cylindrical portion of a sheet metal cylindrical member and an outer periphery of a base plate portion continuous to the root portion. A cylindrical portion continuous to the first valley portion is elongated in the axial direction while being thinned, thereby forming an intermediate shaped member, and, while applying a pressing force in the axial direction to the cylindrical portion of the intermediate shaped member, an intermediate portion in the axial direction of the cylindrical portion is pressed in a radial direction to be inwardly bent, thereby shaping the pressed place into an annular second valley portion. When the cylindrical portion of the sheet metal cylindrical member is sufficiently long, the elongation of the cylindrical portion is not required.
Abstract:
A method for processing a nut seat formed around a bolthole on a wheel including the steps of drilling the nut seat and the bolthole substantially simultaneously with a step drill and performing roller burnishing on at least edge portions of the nut seat wherein the roller is rolled on the nut seat in the circumferential direction of the nut while the roller is pressed onto the nut seat. By roller burnishing, at least the edge portions of the nut seat are finished to a specular grade. The strength of the nut seat itself can be increased by the roller burnishing, thereby decreasing the required thickness of a light alloy wheel and the total weight of the wheel. In addition, the manhours for processing the wheel can be reduced.
Abstract:
An internally straddling type disc brake for automotive vehicles is disclosed including a cast brake ring having two spaced apart sectional friction brake rings defining two braking surfaces separated by a plurality of axial ribs defining a plurality of peripheral cooling ducts between the sectional friction rings. At least two peripheral radial connecting elements extend from the ribs centrally between the sectional friction brake rings and are connected to corresponding connecting sections on a brake carrier.
Abstract:
A method of forming a one piece vehicle wheel is disclosed which method includes the steps of initially forging a rough vehicle wheel shape which is then subjected to a series of spinning operations to contour the rim portion thereof. Part of the final contouring of the rim portion of the wheel is performed without mandrel backing and the entire final contouring is performed after a solution heat treatment thereof in order to assure accurate formation thereof. Additionally, if desired, final machining and/or trimming operations may be performed without removing the wheel from the final contouring apparatus.
Abstract:
Machine permitting a deep slitting in a periphery of non planar discs for obtaining wheels carrying a pneumatic tire, wherein the disc to be slit is driven in rotation on a floating support, that is a support which automatically compensates for flatness irregularities while slitting knurling means are mounted on a driving device which is rigidly supported on a fixed frame.
Abstract:
Process and apparatus for assembling a wheel rim and dish with a press fit wherein the abutting surfaces are of clean, unscored metal ready for subsequent welding. The rim and dish have relatively mating diameters, either over or undersized, which can be assembled without deformation and the rim and dish are then radially deformed into a press fit relationship. When the members are assembled, no lubricant is required on the surface to assemble which would interfere with welding and there is no deformation of the metal which would later cause stress cracks.
Abstract:
A vehicle wheel assembly and method and apparatus for making the assembly in which an outer tire rim and wheel center are fabricated into a secure one-piece unit. Secure attachment and restraint of the two components into one unit are accomplished through a dimpling process in which both components are nested together at a plurality of points through stamping. While very applicable to a steel rim or steel center wheel construction, the invention is adapted for use on several metallic wheel constructions to avoid pneumatic leakage associated with riveting or problems arising from welding of the two components. A fixture and hydraulically operated tool construction utilizes male and female tooling to accomplish the dimpling process in which regions of the wheel rim and center are deformed by force to nest together.
Abstract:
A process for manufacturing monobloc wheels for vehicles from a roughly sed article having the shape of a cylindrical disc. A sequence of die stamping and rotary extrusion operations is carried out on the disc to arrive at the definitive shape, which does not require more than a few finishing operations by mechanical machining. These wheels which may in particular be made of light, aluminum-based alloys, are especially suitable for large tanker vehicles equipped with tubeless tires.
Abstract:
In order to overcome the limitations on availability of suitable steel strip or bars in widths to suit all diameters of agricultural discs, a method of manufacturing such discs comprises cutting blanks from rolled steel strip or bar having a thickness greater than the thickness of the finished discs and a width less than the diameter of the finished disc, the blanks having a length substantially equal to the diameter of the finished discs, rolling each blank in the direction of its width until that dimension has increased to not less than the diameter of the finished discs, and blanking out from each rolled blank a disc with a diameter not less than the diameter of the finished discs and with a central hole, the cross-rolling of the strip or bar necessary to achieve the required increase in width and reduction in thickness having the beneficial result in affording quality comparable with that of discs formed from cross-rolled plate or sheet.
