A branch pipe is formed on a metal tube using a forming tool including a milling part and a burring part adjacent the milling part. The milling part has a first diameter and is provided with a prescribed cutting edge on its outer peripheral surface. The burring part has a sloping surface with a maximum second diameter larger than the first diameter, and has a slope diameter that gradually diminishes in a direction away from the milling part. The branch pipe forming tool can be used for forming a branch pipe on a metal tube regardless of the shape of the metal tube. In a method of forming a branch pipe on a metal tube with the tool, the milling part is used to form an opening in the wall of the metal tube, the burring part is inserted through the opening into the tube, and then pulled back out of the opening while revolving along a prescribed path, so that the sloping surface of the burring part outwardly deforms the edge of the opening so as to form the flared flange or branch pipe extending from the metal tube.

A method and apparatus for forming tapered surfaces on male and female parts to be interfitted one within the other along the complementary tapered surfaces thereof wherein the male part is mounted on the chuck of a lathe wherein the chuck axis extends along the centerline of the lathe, the tool on the lathe is mounted for movement at an angle to the longitudinal centerline of the lathe, and the external surface of the male part is cut while rotating the part in one direction to provide a tapered surface by moving the cutting tool along a line extending at the angle. The male part is removed from the chuck and the female part is mounted on the chuck. The cutting tool is moved transversely of the lathe without changing the angle or vertical position of the cutting edge, and the internal surface of the female part is cut by moving the same cutting tool along a path parallel to the first-mentioned path of the tool while rotating the female part in the opposite direction.

This disclosure relates to a lathe tool for use with a conventional lathe having a generally horizontal bed and a workpiece mounted above the bed and rotatable about an axis generally parallel to the bed. The lathe tool of the present invention includes mounting means for supporting a lever which is pivotally attached to both the mounting means and a reciprocable shaft which has cutting tool holding means on one end thereof. The lever is used to move a cutting tool into engagement with a workpiece to perform such lathe operations as taper turning, taper boring, or the like.

The invention relates to a taper turning attachment for a lathe or the like and includes a template which may be selectively moved to either a first position where it will engage a portion of the cross-slide or to a second position wherein the movement of the cross-slide is unaffected. The template is either raised or lowered by means of a piston and cylinder arrangement laterally mounted on the bed of the lathe and may be automatically actuated through the action of an appropriate programming mechanism. The cross-slide includes a downwardly extending lug which is provided with a roller for the purpose of engaging the guide face of the template during the lateral movement of the cross-slide with respect to the carriage thereby causing the tool to move in a path paralleling the template guide face. The angle of the guide face with respect to the spindle is angularly adjustable in the plane in which the cross-slide and carriage move.
