The reading apparatus includes a main body, a first image capturing section for the operator, a second image capturing section for the customer, and a first display section for the operator. The main body has an opening on a surface thereof facing the operator. The first image capturing section is housed in the main body and photographs a commodity through the opening of the main body. The second image capturing section is arranged at the main body and photographs an object held by the customer. The first display section is arranged above the opening of the main body and displays information relating to sales registration processing. The main body has an upper surface inclined downwards from the operator side to the customer side, and the second image capturing section is arranged at the inclined upper surface.

The present invention embraces a device, system, and method to help customers understand which checkout lanes are open and operating most efficiently. The invention utilizes Bluetooth-low-energy (BLE) transmitters located at each checkout lane to transmit updated information related to (i) the lane's status (e.g., open or in-use) and (ii) the lane's quality (e.g., throughput efficiency). Portable electronic devices used by customers may receive the BLE signals and understand (e.g., using augmented reality) which lane would be most likely to provide a quick checkout.

The computer system may obtain a two-dimensional barcode encoded with a transaction identification unique to the transaction. Using the collected data, the computer system may generate a third digital image coded to display the call to action and the two-dimensional barcode. The two-dimensional barcode may occupy the specific position with respect to the call to action. The point-of-sale system may display the third digital image to a customer associated with the transaction via a receipt, a customer-facing screen, or the like.
