The registration apparatus includes a scanner, a storage unit, a communication interface, and a processor. The processor controls the scanner, the storage unit and the communication interface to identify a commodity corresponding to a scanned code, generate the settlement information, and transmit the settlement information to a selected one of the plurality of settlement apparatuses. The selected one of the plurality of settlement apparatuses determines, with respect to itself, whether a settlement processing is currently being performed and whether a settlement processing was completed within a preceding predetermined amount of time. Based on the determination, the selected one of the plurality of settlement apparatuses performs one of the settlement processing with respect to the received settlement information and transmission of the settlement information to another one of the plurality of settlement apparatuses.

A first machine-readable identifier may be rendered in a display device associated with at least one computing device, where the first machine-readable identifier is associated with a first item in a list of items. An audio signal may be captured using a microphone and analyzed to identify a predetermined tone in the audio signal indicative of a scan being performed on a register device. In response to the predetermined tone in the audio signal being identified, the first machine-readable identifier may be replaced with a second machine-readable identifier in the display device, where the second machine-readable identifier is associated with a second item in the list of items.

The consumer simply brings his mobile device within close range of an interface console, which in various embodiments prompts the device to launch an application that causes display of a payment token without user action. If the consumer's device is not NFC-capable, the interface console can read a displayed token optically in the usual fashion.
