Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus for providing a balancing weight in a groove on a rotor disk in a gas turbine engine. The apparatus comprises an elongate reservoir for housing a hardenable material and an inflatable balloon in fluid communication with the distal end of the elongate reservoir. An actuator is provided for forcing the hardenable material from the elongate reservoir to inflate the inflatable balloon with hardenable material within the groove on the rotor disk. A sealing device for sealing the inflated inflatable element to form the balancing weight is also provided.

Abstract: The present invention provides a processing method for processing a component formed by an ALM method using a γ′-strengthened superalloy having a γ′ solvus temperature. The processing method comprises: 1) surface finishing of the component; 2) hot isostatic pressing of the component at a temperature below the γ′ solvus temperature; 3) solution heat treating the component at a temperature at or above the γ′ solvus temperature but below the solidus temperature; 4) primary aging of the component at a primary aging temperature for a first aging time; and 5) secondary aging of the component at a secondary aging temperature for a second aging time.

Abstract: A bleed valve for a gas turbine engine, the bleed valve comprising: an inlet coupled to an air source; and an outlet coupled to an air sink. The bleed valve also comprises a first stage of flow area modulation between the inlet and the outlet. Also a second stage of flow area modulation between the first stage and the outlet. The pressure can be equalized between the first and second stages. There is also an arrangement comprising a plurality of bleed valves and a controller to control the flow areas of at least one of the first and second stages of each bleed valve.

Abstract: This application describes a manufactured component and method for forming the component. The component comprises: a plurality of parts (212, 214) joined together by a straight line joint (216) and a multi-faceted joint (218). The plurality of parts define a cavity (236) having an internal surface (226) and an external (222) surface. The straight line joint extends through a wall of the component along a straight line between the external surface the internal surface; and, the multi-faceted joint includes an external joint line extending from an external surface to meet an internal joint line which extends from an internal surface, the external and internal joint lines being at an angle to one another. The internal joint line and the straight line joint are aligned with one another such that a straight line extending from the straight line joint will coincide with the internal joint.

In a region extending downstream from the circumferential array, the radially inner and outer platforms and/or the radially inner and outer walls having a non-axisymmetric surface bounding the duct. A non-axisymmetric surface may be applied to either or both of the radially outer and radially inner contiguous surfaces and may extend upstream as well as downstream of the circumferential array of outlet guide vanes.

Abstract: A device for chocking and retaining a dovetail root of a blade of a gas turbine engine in a corresponding axially-extending slot in the rim of a disc, the root being mounted in the slot by insertion of a leading end of the root into a proximal end of the slot and then sliding the root towards a distal end of the slot. The device includes a first wedging body having a key portion receivable in a keyway formed at the distal end of the slot. The keyway restrains the first wedging body against movement in the axial direction. The first wedging body further has a first angled surface over which a correspondingly angled leading end surface of the root slides when the root is inserted in the slot to urge the leading end of the root radially outwardly.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of forming a three-dimensional component by additive layer manufacturing. The method comprises scanning a fusing energy beam having a fusing beam focus spot across a layer of powered material in a series of fusing scan lines to fuse the powder material to form a layer of fused material whilst scanning a heating energy beam having a heating beam focus spot in a series of heating scan lines across the material fused by the fusing energy beam. The centre of the fusing beam focus spot and the centre of the heating beam focus spot are off-set from one another and spaced by up to an amount equal to the sum of the radius (y) of the heating beam focus spot and two times the radius (x) of the fusing beam focus spot.

Abstract: A failsafe pin for providing a backup load path for attaching a gas turbine engine to an aircraft structure is provided with a driving element that allows a torque to be provided to the pin in order to check whether the pin has been engaged, and thus whether a primary load path has failed. The pin is provided with anti-tamper arrangements in order to ensure that the pin itself is not compromised when being tested for engagement.
