A volumetric pump for administering intravenous fluids to a patient includes a first housing having an elongate cavity therein with an open and a closed end. A resilient sheet of material having a centrally-located aperture covers the open end, and a pump shaft is slidably disposed through the aperture to form a sphincter seal therebetween. An inlet conduit leading from a fluid source (an IV bag) passes through the housing into the cavity near the open end thereof, and an outlet conduit leading to a fluid sink (the patient) passes through the housing from the cavity near the closed end thereof. A drive shaft is attached to the pump shaft to drive it back and forth in reciprocating motion inwardly and outwardly of the cavity to produce, respectively, a positive pressure forcing fluid out of the outlet conduit to the fluid sink, and a negative pressure forcing fluid from the fluid source through the inlet conduit. A second housing encloses the first housing and pump shaft, and includes a seal formed about the drive shaft to seal the inside of the second housing from the outside.

A servovalve apparatus for use in fluid systems which comprises an elongate flexible valve element having a fixed end and a free, movable end, and a conductive coil which surrounds at least a portion of the valve element adjacent its fixed end. An armature is secured to the valve element so as to be adjacent the conductive coil. Two permanent magnets, are provided adjacent the armature on opposite sides thereof, the magnets being positioned such that one magnet presents a north magnetic pole facing the armature and the other magnet presents a south magnetic pole facing the armature. A receiving plate is provided adjacent the free end of the valve element, the receiving plate having one or more channels formed therein for receiving fluid, and a bore for delivering fluid. Preferably, the channels and bore in the receiving plate originate within and communicate with a concave socket in the receiving plate which has substantially the same radius of curvature as the path over which the free end of the valve element moves during flexure. A deflection cup is disposed on the free end of the valve element to move adjacent the surface of the concave socket and selectively redirect fluid from the bore to one of the channels.

Devices, methods and systems are provided for occluding an opening within the tissue of a body, such as a left atrial appendage. In one embodiment, a delivery system for use in occluding an opening in the tissue of a body includes an actuation assembly operatively coupled to a medical device including an anchor portion and an occluder portion. The actuation assembly is configured to move the anchor portion between a deployed state and retracted state while the occluder portion maintains a deployed state. With this arrangement, the deployed occluder portion can be visualized via imaging at a preferred position prior to deploying the anchor portion of the medical device.
