Abstract: A bone cutter for use within the intramedullary canal is described. The bone cutter comprises a frusto-conical cutting head that extends to a barrel portion for attachment to a drive shaft. The cutting head comprises a plurality of spaced apart blades having a tissue cutting edge that extends radially from the exterior surface of the cutting head. The plurality of blades are arranged at prescribed angular relationships that are designed to increase cutting efficiency and debris removal, thereby reducing reactive torque, axial loading, and head pressure during a surgical procedure.

Abstract: An electrolyte for activating an electrolytic or electrochemical capacitor is described. The electrolyte preferably includes a mixed solvent of water and ethylene glycol having an ammonium salt dissolved therein. An acid such as phosphoric or acetic acid is used to provide a pH of about 3 to 6. The electrolyte is particularly useful for activating a ruthenium oxide/tantalum capacitor having an anode breakdown voltage in the range of 175 to 300 volts.

Abstract: A torque limiting tool is described. The tool comprises a torque limiting mechanism comprising a sleeve connectable to a drive shaft and a torque drive coupler that resides within a housing. The sleeve comprises a sleeve annular sidewall having a plurality of outwardly projecting elongated first lobes and recessed first grooves that are circumferentially positioned along the length thereof. The drive coupler comprises a socket defined by a coupler annular sidewall having a plurality of outwardly projecting second elongated lobes and recessed second grooves positioned along the coupler interior sidewall. Torque is transferred therebetween when the ramped surfaces of the first and second lobes mate within respective second and first grooves of the coupler and sleeve. When a torque limit is exceeded, the first and second lobes of the sleeve and coupler disengage for their respective second and first grooves.

Abstract: In various examples, a feedthrough seal apparatus is configured to seal an opening in a device. The device includes a case surrounding an interior space, the case including the opening therein to allow access to the interior space from an exterior of the case. The feedthrough seal apparatus includes a plug disposed within the opening of the case. The plug is formed from at least one of a polymeric material and an adhesive material. The lead wire extends through the plug, such that a first end of the lead wire is disposed within the interior space of the case and a second end extends from the plug to the exterior of the case. The plug is configured to electrically insulate the lead wire from the case. Some examples include a method of making the feedthrough seal apparatus.

Abstract: An insulative feedthrough attachable to an active implantable medical device includes a feedthrough body having a material which is both electrically insulative, biocompatible and separates a body fluid side from a device side. A passageway is disposed through the feedthrough body. A composite conductor is disposed within the passageway and has a body fluid side metallic wire electrically conductive to a device side metallic wire. The body fluid side metallic wire extends from a first end disposed inside the passageway to a second end on the body fluid side. The device side metallic wire extends from a first end disposed inside the passageway to a second end on the device side. The body fluid side metallic wire is hermetically sealed to the feedthrough body. The body fluid side metallic wire is biocompatible and is not the same material as the device side metallic wire.

Abstract: A lithium electrochemical cell with increased energy density is described. The electrochemical cell comprises an improved sandwich cathode design with a second cathode active material of a relatively high energy density but of a relatively low rate capability sandwiched between two current collectors and with a first cathode active material having a relatively low energy density but of a relatively high rate capability in contact with the opposite sides of the two current collectors. In addition, a cathode fabrication process is described that increases manufacturing efficiency. The cathode fabrication process comprises a process in which first and second cathode active materials are directly applied to opposite surfaces of a perforated current collector and laminated together. The present cathode design is useful for powering an implantable medical device requiring a high rate discharge application.

Abstract: An orthopedic impactor device for positioning an orthopedic prosthetic cup implant during a hip replacement surgery is described. The impactor comprises a distal prosthetic cup engagement portion which is separated from a proximal strike plate by an elongated housing and handle. The housing has a length that extends from a proximal housing portion to a distal housing end with an intermediate housing section therebetween. The intermediate housing section comprises spaced right and left side walls that extend upwardly from a bottom wall to an upper opening. A drive train, comprising a connection rod connectable to an orthopedic prosthetic cup, at least partially resides within the elongated housing. The drive train comprises a linkage sub-assembly that transfers rotational movement of a shaft located at the drive shaft proximal end to the connection rod.

Abstract: In various examples, a hub for a medical device includes a hub housing including a passage from a proximal end of the hub housing to a distal end of the hub housing. A valve is disposed within the hub. The valve is configured to allow passage of an insertable device through the valve while inhibiting leakage of fluid from the valve. A cap is engaged to the hub housing. The cap includes an opening therethrough sized and shaped to allow passage of the insertable device through the opening. The opening allows access to the passage of the hub housing. An angled sidewall is disposed within the hub. The angled sidewall is configured to retain and deform the valve into a curved shape.

Abstract: An EMI/energy dissipating filter for an active implantable medical device (AIMD) is described. The filter comprises a first gold braze hermetically sealing the insulator to a ferrule that is configured to be mounted in an opening in a housing for the AIMD. A lead wire is hermetically sealed in a passageway through the insulator by a second gold braze. A circuit board substrate is disposed adjacent the insulator. A two-terminal chip capacitor disposed adjacent to the circuit board has an active end metallization that is electrically connected to the active electrode plates and a ground end metallization that is electrically connected to the at least one ground electrode plates of the capacitor. A ground path electrically extends between the ground end metallization of the chip capacitor and the ferrule. The ground path comprises a conductive pin electrically and mechanically connected to the ferrule by a third gold braze. The ground path comprises an internal ground plate disposed within the circuit board substrate, and the internal ground plate is electrically connected to both the conductive pin and the ground end metallization of the chip capacitor. An active path electrically extends between the active end metallization of the chip capacitor and the lead wire.
