Abstract: An electric assist turbocharger unit for use in an internal combustion engine, comprising a shaft configured for torque-transmittingly connecting a compressor to a turbine of the turbocharger unit and an electric motor configured for rotatably actuating the shaft in a first rotational direction and in an opposed second rotational direction. The engine includes an aftertreatment system, and the rotation of the shaft is designed to retard the flow of intake air through an intake passage and of exhaust gases through the aftertreatment system, thereby controlling the temperature in the aftertreatment system.

Abstract: An end can assembly for an engine exhaust aftertreatment canister comprises an end can formed from an end plate and a wall extending from a periphery of the end plate, the end plate and the wall having a first cutaway portion formed therein. A pipe is provided in the first cutaway portion and attached to the end can around the first cutaway portion to form a seal with the end can, the pipe having at least one opening provided therein which opens into an interior of the end can assembly. A bracket, comprising a plate and a shoulder extending at an angle from the plate, is attached to the end plate and to the wall, the shoulder having a second cutaway portion formed therein which is shaped to receive the pipe whereby the shoulder abuts the pipe and provides structural support to the pipe and end can.

Abstract: An internal combustion engine controller for an internal combustion engine comprising a memory and a processor. The memory is configured to store a plurality of control maps, each control map defining a hypersurface of actuator setpoints for controlling an actuator of the internal combustion engine based on a plurality of input variables to the internal combustion engine controller. The processor comprises a map updating module, a parameter updating module and an engine setpoint module. The map updating module is configured to calculate an optimised hypersurface for at least one of the control maps based on a performance objective function of the internal combustion engine, sensor data from the internal combustion engine, and the plurality of input variables, wherein the performance objective function includes parameters. The parameter updating module is configured to update a parameter of the performance objective function upon determining a change in an operating condition of the internal combustion engine. The parameters comprise one or both of: engine parameters associated with an engine model; and cost parameters associated with a cost function. The map updating module is further configured to update the hypersurface of the control map based on the optimised hypersurface. The engine setpoint module is configured to output a control signal to each actuator based on a location on the hypersurface of the respective control map defined by the plurality of input variables.

Abstract: A method of using a radio frequency sensor for determining an estimate of soot load in a diesel particulate filter is disclosed, The method comprises: receiving a first mean attenuation value derived from attenuation values for each of a first plurality of radio frequencies within a first band of radio frequencies detected by the radio frequency sensor; and receiving first standard deviation data for the mean attenuation value relating to the first plurality of radio frequencies within the first band of radio frequencies. The method further comprises: determining whether the standard deviation data exceeds a standard deviation threshold, In the event that the standard deviation data does not exceed a standard deviation threshold, the method uses the first mean attenuation value to infer a value for soot load in the diesel particulate filter, in the event that the standard deviation data exceeds a standard deviation threshold, the method comprises: receiving a second mean attenuation value derived from attenuation values for each of a second plurality of radio frequencies within a. second band of radio frequencies; and receiving second standard deviation data relating to the mean attenuation value for a second plurality of radio frequencies within the second band of radio frequencies detected by the radio frequency sensor, In the event that the second standard deviation data does not exceed the standard deviation threshold, the method uses the second mean attenuation value to infer the value for soot load in the diesel particulate filter.

Abstract: The high pressure compressor wheel of a two stage turbocharger assembly is cooled by charge air bled from the charge air flowpath downstream of the aftercooler. A wastegate may be arranged across the high pressure stage and operated by an actuator which in turn is operable by the static or dynamic pressure of the charge air in the cooling flowpath. The cooling airflow may be blocked to open the wastegate and released or resumed to close the wastegate so that cooling air is supplied only while the high pressure compressor wheel is under load.

Abstract: A method of treating exhaust gas in an exhaust passage using a selective catalytic reduction system is provided. The system comprises a hydrolysis catalyst in the passage upstream of a SCR catalyst, and a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) dosing unit for injecting DEF onto the hydrolysis catalyst at a variable DEF dosing rate. The method comprises the steps of predicting an initial DEF dosing rate for converting all nitrogen oxide (NOx) contained in the exhaust gas, and estimating an amount of ammonia stored on the SCR catalyst. The method further comprises the steps of measuring a NOx conversion rate for the system, and adjusting the initial DEF dosing rate based upon the ammonia storage estimate and the measured NOx conversion rate to produce a first adjusted DEF dosing rate. An amount of ammonia-equivalent stored on the hydrolysis catalyst is then estimated, and the first adjusted DEF dosing rate is adjusted based upon the ammonia-equivalent storage estimate to produce a second adjusted DEF dosing rate. DEF is then injected at the second adjusted DEF dosing rate.

Abstract: An exhaust treatment component may be mounted in brackets, each bracket having a clamping surface which in a use orientation is arranged in parallel with a corresponding mounting surface of a fixed mount, the mounting surfaces defining adjustment planes which are spaced apart along a length axis of the mount. Each bracket may be adjusted independently in its use orientation to define a variable clamping position in the adjustment plane. In another aspect, the component may be mounted in one or more brackets, each bracket comprising curved contact surface, each surface being defined by an arc of a respective circle, each arc being contained in the circle of the other respective arc, whereby the centre points of the respective circles are spaced apart in the reference plane so that each arc is contained in the circle of the other respective arc. The component can be clamped to the bracket irrespective of its diameter.
