Abstract:
An information stream organized as a sequence of blocks is encoded according to a graceful degradation principle. The stream poses temporal non-uniform data processing requirements. In particular, with respect to a received block one or more blockwise defined control parameters and an associated blockwise processing load are detected (44). Under control (46) of a processing load for one or more previous blocks, one or more later blocks before processing thereof get an adjustment (48) of one or more of the control parameters. This lowers an expected load for the later block in case of an excessive load, and vice versa when detecting a sub-standard load.
Abstract:
A method and device for recording video on a record carrier (11), e.g. an optical disc. The information is arranged according to a recording format, e.g. DVD-video, for being playable in standardized players. The video information is subdivided into cells and playback parameters for reproducing sequences of the cells are included in control information. The format prescribes that within the recording area the control information precedes the video information for playback functions of the recorded video. However for home recording it is preferable that a recording is made in one pass, i.e. the video is to be recorded directly at its final location. Therefore the recorder has a control unit (20) for performing the following steps: first creating a free area (12) by selecting a starting point (13) within the recording area different from the beginning of the recording area, thereafter recording the real-time information from the starting point (13), and recording the control information in said free area (12).
Abstract:
A processing device comprises an instruction memory 120 for storing virtual machine instructions, such as Java byte codes. A processor 112 of the processing device comprises a predetermined microcontroller core 114 for executing native instructions from a predetermined set of microcontroller specific instructions. The native instructions differ from the virtual machine instructions. The processor 112 is of a type which may request re-feeding of a plurality of native instructions. For instance, the processor 112 may have a pipeline and/or instruction cache which after an interrupt need to be re-filled. The processing device comprises a pre-processor 130 with a converter 132 for converting at least one virtual machine instruction, fetched from the instruction memory, into at least one native instruction. Feeding means 136 of the pre-processor 130feed native instructions to the microcontroller core 114 and re-feed native instructions in response to the processor requesting re-feeding of a number of native instructions.
Abstract:
Audio-centered information is stored on a unitary medium by using a Table-of-Contents (TOC) mechanism that specifies an actual configuration of various audio items on the medium. In particular, each one of a set of one or more Track Areas gets at least two mutually logically conforming Sub-TOCs assigned. This allows to retrieve any constituent Sub-TOC part from at least any correct copy of the Sub-TOCs. Furthermore, one or more Master-TOCs are provided for specifically pointing to each of the Sub-TOCs.
Abstract:
In a transmission system a signal to be transmitted is applied to a source encoder (4) for being encoded. The encoded signal is applied to a channel encoder (6) which applies an error correcting code on the encoded input signal. The output signal of the channel encoder (6) is transmitted to a receiver (14) which processes the received signal by means of a channel decoder (18) and a source decoder (20). The source encoder comprises a codebook entry selector (42) which selects a ternary number generated by a ternary generator (26), such that a synthetic signal derived from said ternary number is a best approximation of a signal to be encoded. The ternary value found in this way is converted into a binary number in such a way that the ternary values corresponding to binary numbers which differ only in one particular digit, differ only in one single digit. This has the advantage that a transmission error of in said particular digit has a small perceptual effect, because the corresponding ternary number differ only slightly. In a preferred embodiment the numerical value of a first codebook entry corresponds to an index of a second codebook entry, and the numerical value of the second codebook entry corresponds to the index of the first codebook entry.
Abstract:
A home theater comprises a video processing sub-system and a PC capable of controlling the sub-system. The sub-system has a de-interlacer/line doubler and the PC has a graphics controller with scaling capability. The combination of the line doubler and the scaler is made to function as a line quadrupler.
Abstract:
A low-pressure mercury-vapor discharge lamp is provided with a discharge vessel and a first and a second end portion (12a). The discharge vessel encloses a discharge space provided with a filling of mercury and an inert gas in a gastight manner. Each end portion (12a) supports an electrode (20a) arranged in the discharge space. An electrode shield (22a) encompasses at least one of the electrodes (20a) and is made from a ceramic material. Preferably, the electrode shield (22a) is tubular in shape with a lateral slit directed towards the discharge space. The lamp according to the invention has a comparatively low mercury consumption.
Abstract:
The variable bitrate coding method according to the invention comprises an iterative process including a first analysis pass and a second prediction pass. The analysis pass allows for a picture coding of a sequence with a constant quantization stepsize (and quality) and the prediction pass allows for a matching of the stepsize to the wanted target bitrate. After some iterations, a last step allows for a finer adjustment of said stepsize with respect to said target bitrate. Application: MPEG-2 encoders for storage media with limited capacity.
Abstract:
Objects of a three dimensional (3D) virtual world that are represented on a two dimensional (2D) image plane are provided with labels which are generated in the 2D image plane itself. The labels are in spatial registration with the object as represented on the 2D image plane. The generation of the labels in the 2D image plane avoids problems relating to perspective and aliasing which can occur when labels are provided in the virtual world itself and are rendered from the 3D virtual world.

Magnetic head having a head face (5) and comprising a head structure composed of thin layers and provided with a transducing element (E11), in which different materials occurring in different areas are present in the head face. The head face is provided with a first layer (31) of a material which is more sensitive to corrosion than said materials in the head face, and the first layer is provided with a second layer (33) of a wear-resistant material which is more insensitive to corrosion than the material of the first layer. The second layer constitutes a contact face (35) for cooperation with a magnetic tape (7).
